Plex Suddenly Transcoding HEVC to AVC

Server Version#: 1.29.1.6316
Player Version#: Latest Samsung Tizen and Android releases

Hi,
Long time Plex user. All my media is encoded in 4K HEVC HDR10 (usually with AC3 5.1 sound) and no subtitles so that Plex direct plays everything.

I therefore have the video transcoding option disabled in the server settings as don’t need/use it.
Never had any playback issues in over a year since I setup the server on my Raspberry Pi 400.

However, the other day my family suddenly started complaining they couldn’t watch their Plex shows, everything was showing “Not Enough CPU” or “This server is not powerful enough to convert video” type errors.

Odd I thought, so took a look, and saw the same on every client device. To troubleshoot I enabled the video transcoding option. The videos then started playing again (albeit buffering occasionally), and I can see that it is transcoding everything I try and play to AVC now.

The only thing I can think of that has changed is the server plex did an update to 1.29.1 recently, I’m fairly sure it was on a 1.28.x release prior to that but can’t recall exact version.
It’s possible the clients updated too as they do so automatically.

For now to keep the family happy I have installed Emby which plays everythin directly without any issues as Plex used to. However, I’d really prefer to keep using Plex.

Is there a bug known to cause this sudden transcoding of HEVC HDR10 sources to AVC? If so is there a workaround or old version I can revert back to until this is fixed?

Thanks!
