Plex sync

Plex Media Server Version 1.21.1.3830

I have a server at 2 locations. I spend a lot of time at a primary location with one server. Trying to enrich my experience I have added my music to my Plex Media Server. I have found that I have to do a lot of matching and pointing of items as Plex doesn’t seem to do the best job of auto resolution of music files. I sync all of my data between the 2 servers. I want to be able to synchronize my meta data / all of the matching and pointing corrections that I have had to make between the 2 servers. Is there anyway that I can do this?

Short answer: no, there’s no supported way to sync metadata/configurations/… between two Plex Media Servers.

Have you organized your media based on the schema suggested by Plex?
Usually this works pretty smooth for me…

Thank you for the reply. I am in the process of doing that now. After some updates are done, I seem to have issues getting it to auto resolve and still need to do a manual match fix each time. Is there something that I might be missing?

hard to tell without knowing what exactly you’re doing or how you name/structure those files of yours

What I find frustrating is that it wont pick up the properties in the file themselves. Such as …\Music\Pop\LadaGaga\Essentials (2018)\04. Poker Face.mp3

The file properties have all of the information for each song. Now I know that Essentials is not an official released album, but a version of it is on most major streaming services. However, all of the individual files have the original album that they were introduced on. None of that information will show up.

You can configure your Library to prefer embedded tags and local files (e.g. cover art) if available.
> Manage Library > Edit...Advanced > Prefer local metadata

I take it your library points at \Music\Pop, not \Music?

Thank you. I will give that a shot. I am pointing at \Music rather than \Music\Pop. I have had categories for my folders such as \Rock or \Country. I did that a few years back. I am wondering though if it makes more sense to just have all artists under \Music? Any thoughts?

Plex will certainly like this better and you’ll have a lower risk of things getting seriously misinterpreted. Same as with tv-shows, Plex expects a certain structure. While movies have some flexibility, that’s less so for tv-shows and music libraries.

If I moved all of the artists from the Genre directories to the \Music folder. Do you think that it would help? Would it be able to auto resolve any created playlists to the new directories?

I’m not 100% sure. From what I remember such changes can result in songs being dropped from playlists.

I appreciate the assistance! One more question for you. I have always used Media Monkey to manage my playlists and other things. Do you know is there anyway to sync or import Playlists from Media Monkey if both systems point at the same directory?

Plex does not populate playlists based on folder structures – so I’d say no… you cannot do that.

My music has been in Genre subfolders for years for Media Monkey. I’ve had no problems with Plex, either PMS or Plexamp.
I also have Plex reading the file tags.
I don’t use playlists so haven’t tried in Plex.

I just recently started playing with Plexamp. We are having issues using it offine. We have downloaded a playlist, but you can not seem to navigate the playlist while offline. Perhaps I am overlooking something.

I still sync my phone with Media Monkey and use PowerAmp for a player.
Plexamp has no widget so not really useful for me on a phone.

You currently cannot navigate the content of downloaded items (e.g. albums, playlists, stations…). Might be worth to keep one eye on the release notes

Thanks. I am hoping that will be included in future releases.

And here you go

Awesome!! Thank you Tom!

Tom, that last update was awesome. Adding the ability to browse my playlists and also download more than 24 hours of music was a huge thing for me. I spend a lot of time playing music offline. Sometimes for a week at a time as I will be out in the woods. I was wondering if I could make a request for a future release? As I was saying I spend a lot of time in offline mode. I love that I can now select whatever is in my playlists that are downloaded. My request is could it be made to be able to use the browse or search functions for any music that is downloaded to my phone? Not dissimilar to how I use the Library function when connected to my server.
