IDK. I just thought it was ignorant and irresponsible.
Plex doesn’t play encrypted dvd or bluray discs. That requires i decrypt them into a compatible forrmat. According to US law, I’m a pirate because i broke DRM. First purchase does not protect this.
US plex video users are pirates, even if like me, you have a bought disc of every piece of commercial video media in your video rack next to your plex server.
It’s already been said that Plex will share information related to the playback of their respective media. i.e. send info about playback from MGM’s service to MGM.
Plex will not share information related to your personal content from your Plex Media Server.
They are not referring to content in your library. It specifies third-party content viewing.
Valory said that it won’t provide any data to content providers about what’s in Plex users’ personal media libraries, but it will provide a lot of the anonymous, aggregated usage data that comes from opt-in third-party content viewing.
What @demsd and @anon18523487 said
Hope the default is opt-out…
I predict there will be no opt-out, but I hope the ‘internal logistics’ the suppliers of said content, jam-packed with advertising receive, reveal just how many of us won’t watch add-supported Movies and TV Shows.
If we could handle ad-packed entertainment we wouldn’t need Plex - we could just turn on the TV.
On the other hand the data might reveal there’s GOLD in them thar hills.
One way or another that Data is a valuable commodity and won’t be wasted - by letting any of us opt-out of it’s accumulation. <— It’s a guess, but probably a pretty good one.
There will be the same opt-out like there is already for Podcasts, Webshows, News and Tidal.
On the other hand, if you want to use the on-demand movie streaming, then usage (of the on-demand video and that alone!) will be recorded and shared with the advertising partners and the content owners. And you won’t be able to use on-demand video if you block the involved servers in your firewall or ad-blocker.
And that’s only fair and required to finance the feature.
If that isn’t exactly what I predicted - it’s exactly what I meant.
IF we believe those op-out switches actually do anything, we’d better believe On Demand Ad-Supported Streams will be monitored and that data shared with ‘whoever’.
The fact is User Data IS a valuable commodity - and if that helps Plex pay the bills they’re no different than anything else we use - and there’s nothing ANY of us can do about it. Good or Bad it’s gonna happen one way or another.
It’s just the age we live in - we can live it, or live with it. I lean toward the latter.
You don’t appear any wiser if you take the pessimistic stance by default.
You can simply disable it and not use it. Then nothing will be shared, because there are no usage data to share.
If you are feeling really ornery, use it ONCE, then turn it off.
That way they know they had a user that stopped using it.
Versus a potential user that never used it.
As a Pessimist - what other stance should I take? I’m still a Republican even though our President is an idiot, but it won’t make me turn Democrat. Guaranteed.
Regarding OD Streaming - THAT is exactly what I’ll be doing - but that ‘lack of data’ will also be valuable data. NOTHING we do, or don’t do, goes un-noticed, by someone.
Again - I’m not mad about it. It just is what it is and I can’t do a thing about it. None of us can.
OK - you win. Good Ideas are just good data.
Well except for the obvious, don’t use product/company xyz, go offline/off the grid/etc.
Not saying ‘the cloud’ (which is simply ‘someone elses computer’) doesn’t have it’s advantages, but we certainly lived without, not too long ago.
I live in WV so I’m not too sure if my data can really make it out of these dank canyons, but what does work I’m gonna still use and not worry too much about it since it’s something I can’t tilt at hard enough to effect one way or another.
Expanding on your original thought - I’ll watch one item right up until the first ad-break - then be gone forever. There’s some data for yaz…lol
Plex should add Ad skip---- New Feature request for the new online service
They may clean their pistol with it loaded, but intentional ‘foot shooting’ is right out.
They seem to do everything else on the spur of the moment.
would it have been different? if they had asked the users of Plex what they thought of the online service… most likely not and they would have done it anyway… but it’s nice to be asked…
Now we know were all the development has been spent, instead of fixing issues or adding requested features/support to the core system.
Think we could use the Plex DVR to record some of the content to be watched later?
That would have revealed NOTHING useful except shore up the fact that forums reveal nothing useful about anyone other than forum users.
I’ll speak to Plex and WB with my data, or lack thereof, and that’ll help reveal the truth - and we won’t have any idea what the truth is, but will have contributed to it’s discovery.
I would imagine it is mostly on demand content anyway. So unless you want to record it for offline viewing or for years later, then the on demand would probably fill the need for recording.
