I can set recordings and have even done multiple test recordings at the same time with no problem, but I cannot actually play the files through Plex.
Web interface says "Playback Error This server is not powerful enough to convert video.
I am using a Seagate Personal Cloud NAS as the server. I recognize that this is underpowered for transcoding, but shouldn’t it be able to play locally? The recorded files are perfect and play if I use VLC.
If I try to play it on my AppleTV it just spins to load and then returns to the episode title page.
Using a PlexServer Version 1.13.4.5271 (Up to date) on a Seagate Personal Cloud NAS with an HDHomeRun Quatro as the tuner
Additionally, if certain NAS servers cannot play the recorded files or live TV, then it would be nice for that to be added to the Support page. Because as it is, it implies that all SiliconDust models work on all NAS PlexServers
The limitation is listed in the NAS Devices and Limitations Support Article. You can also review the NAS Compatibility List that is linked to within the document that contains a link to the Plex NAS Compatibility Guide that shows the support for transcoding for most NAS devices. The below image is from the list with the Seagate NAS I believe you are using. As you can see from the image that particular NAS does not have the capability to transcode SD or HD video.
Most US broadcasts of OTA which I believe you are receiving since you mentioned the HDHR Connect Quatro tuner are mpeg2. When using a web browser to view a mpeg2 video the server must be able to transcode the mpeg2 to h264 for the web browser as shown in the screenshot below.
What you can try since you were viewing from a web browser is to try Plex Media Player if you are on a Windows or Mac. The same video played in the web browser above is Direct Playing in Plex Media Player.
Thanks for the tip to use the app vs the web browser. This allowed it to play from my computer, but it still cannot play from an Apple TV. I assume that it is the lack of transcoding. I have been putting off the purchase of a Synology DS418play, but I think I’m going to pull the trigger on that, install the 64-bit Plex media server and enable hardware accelerated encoding. I’m pretty confident this will allow AppleTV playback.
Thoughts?
I really can’t answer that question. I have no experience with the Synology DS418play NAS and how it functions as a Plex Media Server or the transcode ability of the device. From the NAS Compatibility Spreadsheet it appears that it can transcode 1080p.
