Plex vs. Plex Media Player

Hey guys,

so please call me a moron if applicable, but I’m having a really hard time getting to grips with a blog post going into great detail about a new Plex app instead of the Plex Media Player and how it’s different and may impact HTPCs yadda yadda yadda. Something about possible downloads. Yawn.

So here I am, with 2 apps now that look alike (even completely the same when the new design is activated in Plex Media Player) and I’m utterly confused what this is about. Both are apps, so they would run on a computer (which an HTPC is, after all), both look the same, both got the new Qt engine. No visible difference other than that download thing some may find useful, but instead of integrating that into PMP the Plex gods decided to double their efforts by having to support 2 apps instead of one.

Would anybody be able to enlighten me as to the point of all this?

Once upon a time in a Galaxy very near where you live:

It was decided when the villagers rioted to keep PMP around. Great cheers went up from the villagers.

Plex Player is a new Player App that at one time was going to replace PMP. Both look the same in Plexweb Mode, but PMP has TV Mode - so you can use it from across the room when dragged to your TV. A BIG Plus according to formerly rioting Villagers.

Both are available - both work quite well. Neither are Plexweb - that runs in your browser and will Direct Play VERY Little.

PMP:

New Plex Player:

That should, pretty much, bring you up to speed.

Note: you may be called upon if rioting resumes - you will be supplied a torch, a pitchfork and one bag of juicy dung at that time - see Reggie in the Villager Equipment tent, just past Molly the Mutton Vendor. The smell will lead you right to her, but her Mutton ain’t bad.

Thanks a bunch for the very much enjoyable response!

So that “TV Mode” (just went to look for it and saw it for the first time lol) is the main differentiator and the reason why folks are running amok with buckets of tar and feathers? Meaning it’s all about a mode that shows stuff in a somewhat larger font size so it can be viewed from miles away?

Well, among other very helpful functions and settings - settings of which are available ONLY while in TV Mode - and completely missing from the new Plex Player.

In my experience the new Player app works very well, but is dam hard to see from across the room - without these:

There was also no way to enable digital audio-passthrough in the new app, so if you have a receiver, you couldn’t get Dolby/DTS audio anymore.

Also, playback isn’t accelerated by graphics hardware in the new app, which means your CPU is working hard, and nothing is being deinterlaced. (This is reportedly being worked on in the new app)

Thanks guys, so they basically followed the new trend to fix what ain’t broke and here we are.

Funny how every other week some shop has to come out with a “whole new app” that nobody wants, needs or ever asked for and does less than the one at hand.

I guess they listen to the same consultants as Ubiquiti (Looking at you, UniFi Video). :stuck_out_tongue:

That trend you speak of is the one where they do what they want, when they want and don’t care what users think - until Angry Villagers start storming Castle Plex.

Start beating your plowshares back into swords - 'cause the trend will continue. Eventually. Plex is like Cats, in that about two weeks is as far back as they can remember bad stuff happening to them at the Vet.

yes a font size AND layout i avoid like the plague. actually i think i’d rather have the plague than that awful tv layout.

Apparently, you have no need for PMP dragged to your TV (HTPC-Style). If you did, you’d love TV View - like the rest of the angry villagers that stormed Castle Plex, embarrassed The King, and changed his mind.

TV View is exactly like Roku ‘Retro’ - many users preferred Retro and many users now wish UNO had more of Retro’s missing features, making UNO a right, bloody PITA at times.

Those Villagers are on Call, get bored easily and are looking for another reason to hate on Castle Plex… Roku UNO in it’s current state is a dam good reason - and I’m almost ready to prefer PMP TV View to Roku UNO. It’s almost a No-Brainer, in fact.

What happened to Audio Passthrough mode. I do not see the option in either the App or Server programs. This severely affects my setup as all I am hearing through the new 7.1 PCM decoding is stereo instead of multichannel audio. If passthrough is not reinstated it will affect my future with this platform.

Well I agree, TV Mode may be useful to some and since I’m not obligated to use it, it doesn’t bother me. Indeed, many people will use it on their TV I reckon (I’m sitting in front of my computer most of the time and when I watch Plex on the TV it’s from my Apple TV anyways).

You may want to read this thread. Particularly the second post in it.

Yeah, the absence of passthrough is a bit weird, innit? Wouldn’t the simple fact people use Plex in the first place lead them to the conclusion they’re somewhat enthusiastic about their movie experience and hence prone to a more high-end setup? :flushed:

Pretry soon y’all are going to have a lot in common with those angry villagers that wanted to keep PMP around… Since it has all that neat **** New Player doesn’t.

Tv View is just one of those things.

this is the view i want to see in server, player, and on the tv. simple to navigate.

Well, then - don’t activate TV Mode (after you’ve set those neat settings in TV Mode you don’t have to go back to it).

PS:
Without TV Mode a whole LOT of Plex Users simply can’t see the interface well enough to use it - your time is coming - your tune will change - eventually.

no my view will not change, cause again i don’t need buttons and images so damn large that they damn near can be seen from space. i get on the server and the player not having to use tv view, but on the tv itself one is stuck with the hideous layout. size the image i posted from a 29 inch wide screen monitor which most can see just fine up to say the dememtions of a 50 inch tv screen, and tell me on a 50 inch tv screen across the room most can’t see everything in that view just fine.

Good for you - I am so happy for you I can barely stand it.

I can’t. The posters are blobs of color unless jacked up full size and the text is smudges of white lines, not recognizable as text - and text can’t be jacked up at all. I don’t have a 50" TV, there isn’t a 50" TV in my future, nor is it for millions of other Plex Design Victims.

Plex learned, and make no mistake, what they had envisioned as the wave of the future - turned into a tsunami of **** when the forums melted down and they backed up 10 yards to punt. PMP will be around for a while - cause it is needed - maybe not by you.

The CTO recognized the mistake - and corrected it. Story over.
