What will happen with PMP?

With the new HTPC app on the way I wonder if they will kill functionality with the current PMP app.
I don’t need any of the new features. PMP is everything I need really. So has there been anything posted on PMP’s fate?

What new features?
What’s different?
What’s the problem?

Are you using:
Plex Media Player
Plex for Windows
Plex for MAC

The real PMP is exactly the same as the HTPC version (in appearance) - except the Plexweb mode (which is gone). If you want Plexweb Mode - use Plex for Windows.

Eventually - like all things Plex that have been replaced by something else - Old PMP will go away in favor of New PMP (HTPC). The Hapless User with Tenure knows it’s gonna happen ('cause it will) - and we get used to the new stuff early, so we don’t have to find out about it suddenly on Game Day - when everything is broken.

If you really need PMP (HTPC) - best get to using it now and join the thread so they can start getting it fixed for ya. One day Old PMP will be gone. Don’t wait until that day.

Here is a list of features:

  • Support for lots of newer features, including:
  • Skip intro
  • Live TV & DVR grid-style program guide
  • Tracks from movies and TV episodes
  • Free on-demand movies and TV shows from Plex
  • Free live TV channels from Plex
  • More screen saver options: media artwork and photos
  • The app is designed to be run in fullscreen on a TV or projector. It has a fixed 16:9 aspect ratio, and you can choose between 1280x720 (720p), 1920x1080 (1080p), and 3840x2160 (4K) in settings.
  • Updated some input mappings. A few Plex Media Player input mappings are no longer available in Plex HTPC (complete list here ). Inputs and mappings can be customized similar to Plex Media Player (more details here ).
  • Updated Bluetooth gamepad mappings for DualShock 4 and Xbox One on macOS and Windows. DualSense and Xbox Series X are only supported on macOS for now. The app only responds to gamepad input when it’s focused.
  • Updated the player engine. We’d love lots of feedback around the playback experience. How is 1080p and 4K playback working compared to PMP?
  • Updated CEC integration. If you use CEC in your setup, please try this out and let us know how it goes!

The problem I’m seeing is that Plex is pushing out yet another app for the same platform. I don’t get why they stopped working on PMP in favor of this.

I’m using Plex Media Player with the mpv playbackengine as stated in my OP and I will probably keep on using it no matter what.

No I won’t because PMP works perfectly fine. So why switch to something that’s broken and not stable?

You can turn off ALL Online Media Sources:

As for the rest of it - it’s basically invisible.

Would you rather PMP went away entirely?
It was slated for demolition, but a form meltdown prevented that and the New PMP was the cost.

That’s life in the Plexiverse.

Good Luck to ya.

I would much rather have an open source alternative than getting forced to use a new app every ~ 2 years.

Plex Media Player
Plex for Windows
Plex for MAC

I’m under the impression that @JuiceWSA doesn’t realise you are not using any of those as…

Plex-HTPC is only a month or two in existence.
And is actually called Plex-HTPC, so definitely none of the above.

Without a Version Number it’s all a guess.

I’ve seen people complain about PMP - and then find out they’re using Plexweb (or PfW/PfM).

I do like to find out these little details before the thread is 10 feet long - and we did that.

I don’t blame JuiceWSA for asking which app I’m using. This is the very reason I’m making this thread. There are too many apps on one platform.
We have:
Plex for Windows
Plex from Windows Store
Plex Media Player (which I’m using)
And now Plex HTPC

I just want freedom. And I won’t have that if they kill off Plex Media Player.

Plex for Windows Store is long deprecated, and PMP will be deprecated once Plex HTPC is release ready (currently it’s in preview). That will leave:

Plex for Windows/Mac (Plex Web UI with mpv playback capabilities + downloading content for offline)

Plex HTPC (10’ UI for home theatres and TV screens with mpv playback capabilities).

It’s worth noting that both Plex for Mac/Windows and Plex HTPC use much newer versions of mpv than PMP, with improved performance and features.

It does run like a Striped-Ass-Ape and and long as I have at least one of them that won’t work with a mouse (I just don’t get it) and works on my TV - that’ll do.

Between PfW for the desktop and PMP HTPC - I have powerful player apps where I need 'em - and that’s what matters.

Congratulations - I’m happy.
This time…(Call Ripley)…lol

My comment wasn’t intended to be snarky.
I just wasn’t sure if you knew that Plex-HTPC even existed… and why would you (or indeed anyone).

If I can be bothered on my days off I will find the original post where Plex.Inc told us that the HTPC concept was dead and the Shield or ATV4K or Roku was the future. NOBODY used HTPC except a few die-hard old school types. (So we were told)

Now it seems that the HTPC concept is Plex latest and the coolest thing?
It’s honestly completely baffling.

It’s very strange, I have just rebuilt a HTPC from some old parts and case I had to try it out.

At the same time they have developed this HTPC app (that they told us was dead concept) The android version of Plex which was suppose to be the “future” of the living room is has been left in a state of disrepair for months; On android you can’t watch recordings in progress, You cant search the live TV guide, Some DVR recordings play in slow motion when the audio type switches. But they have had time to build a completely new app where all this works, on a set up they told us was dead.
