In my house, I have a mixture of PC’s hooked to TV’s, and Roku’s. My family uses & likes Plex, even my distant family likes to watch my plex for its remote capabilities and easy to use menu system. My entire family can really care less about movie image quality. Myself, I am a bit of a videophile. Video quality means alot to me. Granted, if I am just playing a movie for background noise, I use Plex. However, when I am actually watching a movie (paying attention to), I use VLC. It seems like VLC is a much more strait video file player, and doesn’t really bother with trans coding (Yes, I know you can turn off trans coding in Plex).
Question…is there any really video quality difference Plex vs VLC…what is your experience ?
i have never has issues with playback of file with vlc, but plex drops sound all the time and had codex support issues too. If you want web based streamer try jellyfin, it can be bugging to setup but has more option to configer it anyway you want. or try kodi if you want media play that works and is watch plex was originally based off
if it wasn’t for cross platform compatibility and simple setup for new users. i would have stop using plex long ago. the development team seem to spend more time adding feature then fix bug that have been around for years. recent update keep bugging me to update to the new library but after trying it, it was really bad at matching movies and i has to revert the metadata. now it keep telling to upgrade back to broken crap.
If you direct-play (which will happen 99% of the time if you are local), then there should be no difference in quality between VLC and Plex. I used to use VLC exclusively on my own computer before I got Plex. Once I set up Plex properly, I used the web client for a bit, before installing the Plex-for-Windows app. Now, I never use VLC other than for its track synchronization tools when I am processing video files. The Netflix-style library view of my content is so amazing I never knew I needed.
