Plex Web App won't connect to my Desktop PC server after updating to Windows 11

Server Version#: 1.40.4.8679-424562606
Player Version#: 4.134.2
<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>

Hi, I’m hoping someone here can help me. I’m not very computer literate and my desktop PC that I use as my Plex Media Server has stopped connecting to my server via the Plex Web App (app.plex.tv). The following message appears when I launch the web app:

“app.plex.tv is unable to connect to “Primary Computer” securely”

Because of this I can’t watch or see any media on my PC or on my Android TV that my PC streams to. I’ve tried various troubleshooting methods as outlined on this website but nothing has worked. This problem only began after my PC automatically updated from Windows 10 to Windows 11. I’m thinking that this update has changed some setting somewhere on the app or PC that I haven’t been able to locate.

If someone can offer some advice it would be appreciated.

Thank you, Brenden

Did you tell the upgrade assistant that you want to keep your apps and files from Windows 10?

  1. stop Plex server using its task tray icon
  2. verify that the network connection of your computer has been classified as “private”. It must not be “public”.
  3. copy the following into the clipboard. then open notepad.exe and paste it in.
    Save the file. Close notepad, then go to the saved text file and change its file name extension from .txt to .reg
    Double click on the reg file and confirm that you want it to make changes to the registry.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server]
"logDebug"=dword:00000001
"LogVerbose"=dword:00000000
"secureConnections"=dword:00000001

Now start Plex server again.
What happens now if you open https://127.0.0.1:32400/web in your web browser?

Thank you for your advice and suggestion.

Firstly, Windows updated automatically to version 11 while I was in bed. It didn’t ask me about keeping my settings from version 10. I did keep putting this update off because I was worried about something like this happening but I forgot to switch off automatic updates.

Before my original post when I was trying to troubleshoot the issue I was able to open my server in Chrome at the https://127.0.0.1:32400/web address. But when I was able to open this address it didn’t fix my original issue of using the app.plex.tv address that I always have used for years. Hence I’m not able to stream to my devices.

I tried your suggestions. My network was set to public so changed it to private as you suggested. I also applied the registry fix you suggested. Now, the https://127.0.0.1:32400/web address will open in Chrome but I’m getting an error message in Chrome saying your connection is not private and I have to go through other steps to get it to open which is annoying.

After doing all this I still have the original issue of the Plex Web App not connecting to the server. [“app.plex.tv is unable to connect to “Primary Computer” securely”]. So even if I can now see my server using your work around, it won’t stream to my other devices on my network. Namely my Android TV.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks again, Brenden

It sounds like an issue with “DNS rebinding protection” on your router.
Do you have any 3rd-party firewall software, internet filter, anti virus in use?
Is there a internet filter appliance in your network (pi-hole etc.)?
Can you remember a firmware update on your internet router, or any other changes made to the router/modem?

I have no firewall software, internet filters or anti virus. I don’t know what a pi-hole is but I don’t think I have that either. I don’t recall any firmware updates to the modem. As I said, all this started when Windows updated to version 11. Nothing else has changed. I don’t know what DNS rebinding is but I haven’t changed any of these settings. My DNS settings are the same as before the update. I have just noted that my network connection keeps reverting to “public”, even though I set it to private in the network settings.

That is concerning.
Is there a WiFi connection on your computer or a wired Ethernet port? Or both?
If both, try disabling the WiFi adapter in the device manager.

Is there a VPN software installed?

I don’t use a VPN and my PC is connected directly to the modem via an Ethernet connection. I only use WiFi to stream from the server to my TVs. It seems every time the PC reboots the connection reverts to Public even though I’m selecting Private.

However, once I select private network, the Plex Web App still doesn’t work. It all stems from the Windows 11 update. Something must have been altered due to the update because everything worked fine under Windows 10.

You will need to solve that first, before anything else can be done.

You may want to look at Topic: Network changing from private to public on reboot @ AskWoody

Does it have an additional Wireless connection as well? If it has, disable that wireless adapter.
