Plex Web doesn’t direct play opus music

Since, can’t re-open the old topic, would be nice to have this revisited…

plex web is limited by whatever browser you use supports.

If there’s a reason you can’t use the new Player App:
https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/?_ga=2.83345557.2046312671.1561485849-1864473727.1455657109#plex-app
(Psssst: It’s basically a hot-rod Plexweb)
You’ll probably be stuck with a transcode, or silence.

if you just want music, search for plexamp

if you want music+video, search for plex media player

I am impressed with the New Player App.
The update for PMP repaired the dropped frames (for some, me particularly).

There are options and If I didn’t need these:
PlexVisionAid
when watching the New Player on my TV from across the room, I might run it all the time. I do have options tho…

:slight_smile:

Most web browsers support it, plex on the server side does not allow it because of how it’s configured.

See previous topic:

A minor config change can make it work. This is more just to bring this back to attention, because I believe only legacy browsers are the ones that don’t support it and sometimes plex transcodes videos with incompatible audio to OPUS for web browsers… So why not music support… Seems like an oversight…

For the secondary question about why not use an app… I find my self in places where I only have the web-player for access…

That would be a valid reason for not using one of the Player apps.

A workaround for this is editing the PMS’s Plex Web profiles in the js and access it directly instead of going to plex.tv/web.

It’s just weird that opus is in video’s direct play profiles but not in music’s.

If opus is to be the future, it would be nice to have updated support for it…

Hi @squaresmile,

Would you mind fleshing out the exact steps for making those edits?
I’ve been flirting with Opus since I wrote that first thread almost 2 years ago; and it would be lovely to be able to finally DirectPlay even if it means going local rather than using app.plex.tv

Edit the file

/usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Resources/Plug-ins-e67a4e892/WebClient.bundle/Contents/Resources/js/chunk-2-*.js

Search for audio/ogg. You will find the following dict item in music: directPlay

ogg:{mimeType:'audio/ogg; codecs="vorbis"',audio:{codecs:{vorbis:{}}}}

Add opus to the codecs so it becomes:

ogg:{mimeType:'audio/ogg; codecs="vorbis"',audio:{codecs:{vorbis:{},opus:{}}}}

Since PMS Plex Web update will give you a new js file, I would write a script to do this automatically.

Btw, you can access the PMS Plex Web remotely by going to https://<ip-address>.<hash>.plex.direct:32400 or your reverse proxy. Open the browser console of Plex Web to find out.

Only device I ever see direct playing Opus without transcoding is the NVIDIA Shield.

Phones do not require transcode, ie: android/ios (they actually use OPUS as the format to transcode to when remote (plex or plexamp))

Fairly certain the Apple TV does not require transcode also. The current available web browsers are all fully compatible, but Plex has not enabled it to be used for for that…

Although those devices can play opus. On the dashboard I see opus being transcoded on apple TV, Android and iOS devices. So there in lies the rub.

That again possibly points to a plex server issue… Which is what this request is about… the browsers support, Plex just needs to enable it…
