My plex server is behind a firewall with everything from the server going out to WAN is blocked other than any whitelist I add,
is there a generic whitlist I need for plex to find its way to the internet,
also for imbd syncing?
In most setups I have seen everything is allowed from secured trusted networks to unsecured untrusted networks so for example LAN to WAN everything is allowed since you trust all your machines and allow them access to any untrusted services.
From WAN to LAN or from Unsecured to Secured this is usually where traffic is limited by the firewall so that unknown untrusted unsecured devices can’t communicate with your trusted devices.
You have 2 options -
-
allow your plex server (trusted LAN) to communicate with any (untrusted WAN)
-
Allow and monitor traffic from plex server in your logs and see what it is trying to communicate with on the WAN and document the destination subnets and after some time only allow Plex to communicate with those destinations.
I would suggest option 1 since options 2 might work but as people use DNS, subnets are subject to change which might leave your access broken should somebody update the IP in DNS.
