Plex will launch its TV & movies store next month VOD you want?

Mine as well. My silence is primarily due to my departure because of this issue.

The “additional social features” is the main issue, but their UX/UI redesigns haven’t been the greatest either. The Plex interface used to be much more customizable, but that was changed, too.

But back to the main issue: the “social features”. Much like the last anti-privacy change, social features are just a means to harvest & sell data. That’s always been the case. So more social features isn’t remotely a positive step and seems far away from what Plex’s original goals were.

Combine that with how the last change was an opt-out and with countless settings buried within sub-menus and random other pages, these planned changes look to follow that path… and it’s not a good one.

A UI/UX redesign talked about in the same breadth as social features implies that the two are linked in some form.

Above all, I’m very worried about the big UX/UI redesign they announced. The last few changes in the area were very bad to say the least.

Just a quick example:

What big new changes without any kind of option or customization are awaiting us? What will the dev team try to push down our throat this time?

This makes me nervous as well but again, I will try to give them the benefit of the doubt. There is a great opportunity for improvement here… If the redesign spans all the clients. The current state of affairs where clients can differ in basics like indicating watched state is bonkers.

In that Fireside Chat thread we have, the devs indicated they agreed and would be unifying things. We haven’t really seen that though, so maybe this redesign is where that will happen. :crossed_fingers:

I am even open to some social features. For example, maybe I add a movie to my library and I know a particular friend of mine would like it. It would be genuinely useful if I could tag them somehow in the Plex GUI, and they get some kind of Plex notification saying, “Check this out!” That’s technically “social” and to me at least, it’s also inoffensive and useful.

Concerning the privacy mishaps (to put it politely) of late and watching the big wigs of the entertainment industry soon having a foot in the door, I‘m asking myself another question:

Are these the right guys to take care of my private pictures and videos any more?

I’m wondering how they plan to do it. Whether it becomes a separate service or do they integrate it and say allow you to create collections & playlists with your bought media?

  • Presumably some kind of DRM? but maybe not maybe it will be purchases rather then renting meaning you keep them.

  • Subtitles if no subtitles provided will plex allow you to search and download subtitles like you can for your own media. Currently this is not allowed for watching and of plex’s ad supported content

  • Can you share what you buy with your ‘home’ or is it per user ONLY?

That’s a very interesting observation :+1:

Stay on topic folks! This has nothing to do with any new features from plex related to VOD.

Folks.

This thread is about Plex transitioning to a paid streaming service and what consequences this move will have on Plex Media Server users and especially on privacy issues.

That’s it.

Issues about ATV bugs - or the lack of them - would be better in their own thread. Let’s keep our eyes on the ball. And civilized, please.
