Plex will not play 4k content from synology ds418play

Was having issues with my synology DS413 not playing 4K content. Read up and found out it did not transcode 4k. So I upgraded to the synology DS418play with the same issue “server not powerful enough to play content smoothly”. This error is on all 4k content when I try to use plex from my Amazon Fire TV. I can use synology DS Video on my smart TV to play 4k flawless but not plex. I downloaded the 64bit version of plex from the plex website. Anyone have any suggestions? The new ds418 play has a CPU: Intel Celeron J3355 (dual-core).

Those prebuilt NAS servers are generally not powerful enough to transcode 4K, even if you’ve upgraded to one that says “Up to 2 transcode streams for 4K”. The simple truth is, you do not want to transcode 4K… You want all instances of 4K to DirectPlay.

On your FireTV go to plex, go to settings, go to quality settings, and change all of it (remote and local) to maximum, for both audio and video. Then try again… While it’s playing, even if it says it’s not powerful enough, go into the dashboard on the server, and check to see if it’s DirectPlay or Transcode…

If it’s still Transcode, you’ll need to give a fresh set of logs:

  1. Make Sure debug logging is on, and Verbose is off
  2. Restart plex server
  3. Wait 5-6 minutes
  4. Recreate issue
  5. Once issue happens stop stream
  6. Download logs and attach to this post
  7. Capture XML data from movie you attempted to play and attach to this post as well
