Plex Windows App Stuttering on playing some mkv video

@dejp1993 what version of the app are you running?

@wintered I only now noticed your post. What version of the app did you revert to, do you remember?

Hi @pombeirp I just uninstalled the app and re-downloaded/installed it from the Store. According to the store that should make it the latest version, 2.1.2.33. I’ve confirmed that I still having the problem after the re-install. I also noticed that it doesn’t seem to be able to buffer very much. DirectPlay and DirectStreaming are both turned on.

I’m still seeing the same thing, Stuttering like mad unless you change it from original to the next option down.

It most certainly has something to do with the 1511 build, I understand Plex needs time to resolve this but come on its been exactly 99 days since 1511 introduced these new parameters.

I’m running Plex 2.5.3, Plex Media Player 1.0.4 on PMS Server Version 0.9.15.5 - thanks

Stuttering on all videos for Windows 10 - same versions run smoothly on MacOS

@avow, the problem is not with parameters, it is with the system media player that we use (same thing happens with other apps that use the OS component). We’re working with Microsoft to help them investigate why their player component is stuttering like this. Hopefully we’ll get a usable workaround or a fix.

@grunger106 changing it to another option causes the video to be transcoded in real-time. The same thing can be achieved by disabling Direct Play and Direct Stream in the Media settings.

@pombeirp ah - that makes sense, obvious when you think about it!

As this is a known issue maybe sticky this? - I’m sure people are trying allsorts to make it work and it just won’t at the moment

Just got the confirmation from Microsoft. They managed to repro and find the responsible team, and it turns out it was already a known issue and they are working on it for inclusion in an upcoming Insider Fast ring release. Fingers crossed.

Good news

This is happening for me as well, on my Surface Pro 4 and on my desktop. I will log in when I get home and get my version information.

This is such great news! Thank-you very much

Thanks for the info. I have been trying to fix this for nearly 2 months and thought maybe it was a glitch in the Intel Skylake processor and/or NVidia drivers. It is worse on 1080p files. It occurs both on my custom desktop and my Surface Pro 4. The February 23rd Plex updates made no difference. I’ll wait for confirmation that this issue is fixed by Microsoft before switching to the Windows Insider builds.

Any chance they release the fix before next non insider build (redstone) ?
I am using a lot plex sync on my laptop to have some movies for kids on the go and currently it is not usable because of this stuttering… Is syncing with encoding in 720p prevent the problem ?

Good news: I was able to find a better workaround that I’ll be incorporating into the next release of the player, until Microsoft releases a permanent fix for the problem.

That is good news! Looking forward to it

Hi,
Same thing happened to me as well.
I haven’t use the tablet for a while, but last evening when I tried to watch a movie, it was shuttering a lot. Really bad at the beginning after a while less, but it was still doing it. First I thought that is the server, but it was fine on the others devices that I am using it ( 2 tv’s and a Roku ), then I played it via WM player share and everything was alright.
Good that I found this thread. It spared me for a lot of time trying to find what is wrong

Version 2.1.3.1 is making its way to the store. I’d appreciate feedback regarding whether the workaround helped at all. From what I’ve seen, I was able to get perfect playback on a powerful desktop machine, but no change on a slowed Surface Pro 3. Looking forward to hear about your experience.

New version installed. First test with a 1080p mkv passed. To be confirmed
with more tests as sometimes, not often, it was working without stuttering.
