Stuttering on Plex for Windows

Server Version#: 1.18.9.2578
Player Version#: Plex for Windows - 1.6.3.1009-57cf57c8

  • Windows 10

I recently reformatted a windows 10 machine and installed Plex for Windows on it. Whenever I play any video from the server it stutters slightly. I have tried it on movies and ripped tv shows as well as live TV. You can really notice it when there is a scroll of text across the screen.

I have checked the system resources on both the PC that the player resides on as well as the server and none of them appear to be saturated.

I don’t get these issues on any of the other players that I use.

Something else to note is that I am running on 2 x 2560 x 1440 displays, but obviously the player is only on one of them at a time. I thought maybe there was some sort of upscaling issue that that was causing it, but the system resources don’t seem to indicate this.

I have attached a log file.

I will add that I just installed update 1.6.5.1097-3bb9dc68 today and the problem persists. Below I have attached some screen captures that show resource usage for both the server and the client during live TV playback.

Server

Client

It appears that I don’t have the stuttering issue when playing movies via the web app, but the web app won’t play live TV. When try to play live TV on it or any other player (web app and roku so far), it just hangs and then ties up the encoder until I kill the process on the server and restart the plex server, but that is a topic for another thread.

Do I need to post this somewhere else to get support?

I am experiencing the same stuttering issue with the desktop player. The web browser player is working fine and streaming to the phone is fine as well while testing with the same movie clips.

Not sure why, after seven days, you have received zero response. Searching the internet has so far yielded no solutions, and not much current discussion of this issue.

After everything I have done to resolve the issue, all kinds of tests including safe mode boot and complete uninstall (including residual registry keys) and reinstall to isolate the problem I am leaning toward it being a glitch in the current build. If that is the case, a rollback to a prior version might work for now, if that is possible.

It was present in the last version I had installed as I received an update after posting and it continues to persist.

I can not stream to the player at over 4mb/sec or it stutters while if I use the Web App it streams fine at all speeds.

i have the same issue using both plex for windows and plex media player. web player works fine but since most browsers don’t support HEVC many times the file is transcoded even though it’s local.

So I’m seeing the same issues on my Surface pro but not on my desktop. on my surface I bring up task manager and use the performance tab. I find that while playing a file from my NAS I’m using 60% of my GPU. If I play the same file on the windows default app (Movies and TV) it uses less than 5%. In the Plex app it seems if I enable or disable hardware acceleration it makes no difference on the GPU load. So for some reason Plex is using a lot more resources. I haven’t tried comparing the GPU usage on my desktop. Ill check that tomorrow. Im wondering in my case if the load is causing dropped frames. Sad for me because I want to use my surface for my travel. (not now of course Covid-19 got us stuck home). Hope this info helps in some way. I would like to get fixed.

I have a similar issue, but it is only with ONE new 43" 4k monitor I just got, so attributed it to resolution.

I posted HERE prior to reading this:

Just an update; Plex for Windows updated again last night (Version 1.8.2.1192-89432618) and the problem still persists.

Does Plex typically respond when they acknowledge that something is an issue?

I just update to the latest version 1.11.0.1215-1d8c460c-x86_64 and I still seeing the issue. Is there any fix?

I’ve had this issue with both my HTPC running Plex for Windows and the PMP app. I’ve seen it when I used to use a Shield. It’s not all the time, but it’s often. I have a nVidea GTX1060 video card so I really don’t think its a video processing issue.

I was about to post something looking for help so glad someone else has tried to ask though it doesn’t seem to be getting any attention.

Just updated to 1.11.0.1215-1d8c460c and I am having the same issue. Video on Original quality at 1.1 Mbps stutters. It is unbelievable. If Plex had one job, that is to play a damn video. But they do not seem capable of doing just that.

I have i7-6700K, 32 RAM, 2070, etc. Hardware Decoding on or off does not make any difference. Original or Converted quality does not make any difference either. Fix your broken player please.

Same issue here.
Plex for Windows Version 1.11.0.1215-1d8c460c
Windows 10 home
AMD Radeon RX 480

Plex app, stuttering non-stop. Disabled hardware decoding. Same thing.
Via web page on same machine, no issues.

I’m encountering same issues, as soon as I upgraded to latest window media server, using Plex for windows. I went as far to downgrade Plex media server, but the issue persists.
Is not hardware, these issues didn’t exist previous to media server upgrade.
Please some assistance would be great.

Longtime plexpass member, same issue… Just updated to latest player. I tried disabling hardware acceleration and rebooting. Adjusted vsync and triple buffering settings in Nvidia control panel and rebooted. Reduced windows scaling to 100% and rebooted. Decreased refresh rate and rebooted. Disabled killer network optimizer and rebooted. Set power settings to max and bumped tdp for the Nvidia card and rebooted. Tried local and remote server streams. Tried different combinations of the above… and different qualities… Issue persists. All other players work normally… web, Android, Roku and xbox. Video and Audio codecs don’t seem to make a difference but I’m bored of trying. Download bar indicates the network is well ahead of playback when playback downloads. I’m connected to a gigabit network with bonded gigabit links on the local server… so it’s not a bandwidth issue. Restarted routers just in case. Tried over wireless as well. This definitely feels like an optimization problem in the software. Happy to share whatever info would help and test early versions of the software. LMK.

Having the same issue
Plex Version 4.29.2 (just updated)
Windows 10
NVIDIA 1060

It stutters on the same scenes, it’s not network, doesn’t matter the buffer size. The video plays fine it I play with Media Player Classic

Fixed doing this:
On plexmediaplayer.conf (%LOCALAPPDATA%\PlexMediaPlayer) changed this:

  • useOpenGL = true
  • useSystemVideoCodecs = true

Seems to work for now

Can you please tell me how to find these keys you’ve mentioned? I cannot seem to find them in regedit
Cannot find plexmediaplayer.conf (%LOCALAPPDATA%\PlexMediaPlayer) either
I have the latest version of Plex Player (Version 1.11.0.1215) installed on my Windows 10
I too am facing the very same problem of videos stuttering in Plex Player
Plays fine in web page, but in player it stutters continuously

Would really appreciate your revert on this
