Plex won't install or start

Server Version#: 1.14.0.5470-9d51fdfaa
Player Version#: ??
macOS (El Capitan): 10.11.6 (15G31)

I’ve never encountered problems with plex server updates before (3-4 years runnig). Today I ran the server update and it just kept spinning for an hour. Eventually I restarted the computer. When I was back, I wasn’t able to start the server. So I tried removing everything (https://support.plex.tv/articles/201941078-uninstall-plex-media-server/ OSX section). Still, downloading the latest server version from https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/#plex-media-server

Plex Media Server for Mac

OS X 10.9 Mavericks+

All that happens is I can see the Plex icon on the top bar for a second or two, then it just goes away (crashes). Mind you that I’ve completely removed all trace of the old install.

In an attempt to figure out what’s going on I ran the exec in:
Applications/Plex Media Server/ Contents/MacOS/Plex Media Server
which gave this error (see bellow)… sadly I have no idea what to do with this information.
libc++abi.dylib: terminating with uncaught exception of type boost::exception_detail::clone_impl<boost::exception_detail::error_info_injector<boost::system::system_error> >: Invalid argument

So now I’m stuck with a lifetime plex-pass that I can’t use because for some inexplicable reason I can’t even get the latest server version to neither install nor start :frowning:

EDIT: This solved my issue (rollback)

There is currently a crash on Mac servers when having multi-homed network interface - more than one IP address on an interface - including loopback

I cannot find any crash report for your server - did you have crash reporting disabled?

The output from ifconfig -a would indicate if there is a multi-homed setup

I just rolled back. I am multi-homed on the loopback interface and was crashing upon launch

I understand it is a Mac OS bug - but a change is being made to Plex Media Server to get round the issue and this will get released - hopefully in the next 1.14.x release

good deal. I’m back up and running.

Thanks!

I was also having this issue and rolling back worked for me. Thank you for the post!

Plex Media Server 1.14.1.5487 has just been released as Beta. It has fix for the 1.14.0 issue leading to a crash on launch on MACs when network IP Address aliases are used.

See Release Notice

  • The server could crash when using network interface aliases on macOS (‪#9344‬; rdar://46083980)
