Plex won't play 4k without constant buffering

Server Version#: 11.2-RELEASE-P8 (FreeNAS plug-in)
Player Version#: Plex for Hinsense: 3.13.13, Hisense: MTK5658

I have the Plex server installed on a HP ProLiant Microserver Gen 8 running FreeNAS, which has 3x 4Tb drives and 1x 6Tb drives, everything is connected by Cat5e cable through gigabyte ports and unmanaged gigabyte switches not wireless.

On my Hisense 50U7A TV, 1080p plays perfectly, but 4k films buffer every few seconds so are unwatchable. I’ve tried using Plex on my Xbox One X (also cabled) and on an LG TV 43UF770V (with wireless) with the same problem.

4K films played from the Plex server using my 4K Bluray player’s media player play perfectly as does 4K from Amazon Prime (which are all on the same network and workgroup as the Plex server), but obviously playing from the bluray player isn’t ideal as it doesn’t have the nice Plex interface and means going though multiple folders to get to the films, and also means I can’t access the 4K films from the bedroom TV (which is the wireless one).

Any ideas please?

Cheers

Your NAS has one of the following CPUs which at a glance do not support 4K very well:
–Intel Celeron G1610T (2.3 GHz/2-core/2MB/35 W) processor
–Intel Pentium G2020T (2.5 GHz/2-core/3MB/35 W) processor
–Intel Core i3-3240 (3.4 GHz/2-core/3MB/65 W) processor
–Intel Xeon E3-1220Lv2 (2.3 GHz/2-core/3MB/17 W) processor

Compare your actual CPU to those listed at the link. It should tell you if that is the problem:

Cheers for the reply, I think you could be right. My server has an Intel® Celeron® CPU G1610T @ 2.30GHz (2 cores) cpu, so I’m guessing that the bluray player which is built to play 4K plays ok because it is just accessing the hard drives in the server rather than the server actually playing the file like it would for the TV/Xbox.

Thank you for your help, at least I know now.
