Plex stopped working a week or so ago. Windows automatic updates were disabled and I had not upgraded Plex so I am not sure what changed. It may have coincided with installing of PlayOn software.
When I “Open Plex…” from the tray icon it takes me to http://127.0.0.1:32400/web where I get a “Hmmm…can’t reach this page” in IE (similar in Firefox). However, I can go to http://localhost:32400/web (or use the machines IP address) and it lets me select a user, it then spins for a while and gives me the Plex error “A problem has been detected with a core component of Plex Media Server.”
Here are the steps I have taken to fix it with a lot of uninstall, reboot, reinstall between the steps
Ran Windows Updates
Updated video card drivers
Upgraded to latest versions
Uninstalled, manually deleted local Plex files and registry settings, rebooted, reinstalled
Disabled Firewall
Granted full user permissions to the install directory
I really love Plex and have been running it for years without any issue on the same hardware.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? Looking through the Forums I am seeing similar issues being reported but no support responses. While reviewing the log files I did see lots of requests to 127.0.0.1 instead of the URL I had used to access the server. I don’t think hard coding the home address is a good idea. My motherboard has two network interfaces, I wonder if that could have something to do with it.
These forums are how you make a support request; it looks like this one fell through the cracks.
Just to rule out PMS application data corruption, try the following with Plex Media Server stopped.
Navigate to %LOCALAPPDATA% in File Explorer.
Rename (do not delete) the “Plex Media Server” directory temporarily. The name doesn’t matter.
Start Plex Media Server.
This will cause PMS to rebuild its application data. If you’re able to successfully log in after this it would suggest that something is likely corrupted with the existing application data, most likely the database. If that proves to be the case, stop PMS again, delete the newly created Plex Media Server directory and move your old one back in to place. Then, attempt the database repair process described here:
Thank you for the response, but as I mentioned in the original post, I had already resorted to deleting the local Plex directory and all registry settings. However, I did follow your instructions again with no success. I noticed there was a newer Plex build so I then uninstalled Plex, deleted the directory again, and installed version 1.19.4.2902. Still no luck.
