Plex won't start if an update is available

I have Plex running on my (unattended) Windows desktop. The machine is set to sign-in automatically and Plex is set to run at startup.

Unfortunately, if the machine reboots and a Plex update is available, Plex won’t run because it is blocked by the “Would you like to upgrade?” prompt.

Is there any way to avoid this?

Thanks.

Please try to add the command line parameter -noninteractive to the autostart link.
i.e. “Target” was "C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\Plex Media Server.exe"
and should be now

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\Plex Media Server.exe" -noninteractive

Thank you so much! I will give this a try!

Side question: when this happens, could you make a screen shot?
Because these kinds of prompts should not happen with recent software versions.

Actually, I now realize there’s something I hadn’t been clear about. It is not Plex Server running on this machine but instead just Plex for Windows. Why? Because I have a Plex server running elsewhere, and this machine is just setup to play music from the other server…

Because of this, the -noninteractive switch doesn’t make apply.

Is my setup wrong? Should I be using using Plex Server on this machine instead, even though I’m just using it to play music from another plex server? Will that work?

Thanks!

How are you operating this player? I’m trying to understand how the update prompt presents an obstacle for using the player.

Hi Otto,

As you probably know, in the Plex app (in my case on my mobile phone), there is a Players button (at the top-right) that lets you choose which which player you would like to control. I select the PC in question from the mobile app, and am able to control it like that. Works very well!

The problem is that when the PC in question starts up, and if there is a Plex upgrade available, Plex won’t start until a user clicks Upgrade or Ignore in the little modal dialog. So, if the PC reboots for some reason (ex Windows updates, whatever), Plex might not start and won’t be available as a Player until someone goes and dismisses that dialog…

Let me know if it’s not clear.

Thanks for all the help!

Gotcha. A kind of “head-less” setup.
Hm, that is pretty hard to solve. The Plex for Windows/Mac app usually assumes that a user is sitting in front of it.
Would Plex Media Player be an alternative way for you? It does support Plex companion as well, but does apply software updates automatically.
(it might even be possible to disable updates)

Right now, PMP still has the ‘desktop’ user interface, but it will eventually lose that and retain only the “10 foot” UI, which you might know from the Plex “Smart TV” or “Roku” apps.
