Plex x64 Install

I run a monster plex server (dual 8180s, 512GB Ram, over 300 SSDs now), I’m sitting here wanting to upgrade to x64, when I run the installer, it makes no mention of old installs, just dont want to risk blowing away my AppData folder (which is almost 2TB). Would be a miserable process to rebuild the library

Of particular importance to avoid data loss are the sentences with bold letters in them:

  • Stop/quit/end Plex Server with the tray icon
  • deinstall Plex Server with the regular ‘Apps’ control panel of Windows
(do not use 3rd party ‘Uninstaller’ software like Revo etc.
do not use “Registry Cleaner/optimizer” software like CCleaner et al)
  • for safety, reboot Windows
  • download the installation exe of the 64bit version and install it

What about the app data folder? Wont be overwritten or replaced

If you heed the advice given in the bold remarks, then no.

The regular uninstaller will leave the plex data folder and the registry intact.
Whenever either of these is lost after an uninstallation, it is caused by the meddlings of 3rd-party software tools, like “registry cleaners”, “system cleaners”, “privacy shields” etc.pp.

I was just being paranoid (I once had a botched installed, took like 6 months to fix) but in this case, I didn’t uninstall x32, I just ran the new x64 installer, it just uninstalls and replaces, everything worked perfect once complete.

Just did the 64-bit Plex install on my Server 2012 R2 box and it worked fine. During the installation it did identify the 32-bit install and removed it. Took a few minutes for the server, and libraries, to show in Plex Web after starting Plex Server.

Also, I use a program called AlwaysUp to run Plex Server as a service, and had to update the file path to the new install folder.

Thank you Plex Team for getting this out!!!

Indeed if you use custom tools or run the server as a system service them you’ll have to change a path because 64 bit executables are stored in C:\Program Files, whereas 32bit executables are in C:\Program Files (x86)

Its only at the last stage of the install it mentions it found the 32 bit version and it would be uninstalled. I did my 2 servers over the weekend and it was completely painless !!

I have a weekly backup (3 locations) of my server.

I made sure I had a recent one before installing the 64 bit version of Plex (completed without issue however).

I’ve reinstated my server before from backup and it only takes an hour at most.

So not sure if this belongs here I’ve not had a super clean update since I started testing PMSx64.

I’ve had to manually update for the last 4+ versions. So I’m looking to track where auto update broke.

Auto updated using latest public release. No problems. Win 10 Pro.

I assumed manual update was standard. Well, in that you have to accept the update option to proceed. I actually want this behaviour, not auto update.

Are you saying after accepting the update option, it does not update ?

Win 11 Pro. PMSx64. Latest update. Beta channel.

correct after the download i’m prompted to install service reboots with a prompt to update.

I have two servers this is the same on both. Last night I manually updated the main server. I’m on windows 10x64 beta not ready to make the swap to 11.
