PlexAmp and Airplay

Server Version#: 1.41.0.8994
Player Version#: PlexAmp 4.11.2

Hi, I’ve recently started using PlexAmp as my music player and so far I’m liking it a lot, except I can’t seem to figure out how to enable AirPlay from it. The closest I can find is setting my system audio to use AirPlay but that’s not what I want, as that sends all of my system audio to my remote speakers, when I just want to play my music there while keeping my computer audio on my computer.

Is there a way to send to AirPlay as a built-in function, and if so, how do I activate it? And ideally, can I also have it send music to multiple devices simultaneously? That’s the one feature I’m missing from iTunes at present.

Thanks!

There’s no support for in-app Airplay on the desktop.

Ah, that’s unfortunate. Is that planned? The feature list on the website implies that AirPlay is supported everywhere.

it is not planned.

That’s unfortunate. It looks like Airfoil by Rogue Amoeba will give me the AirPlay functionality I want, at least.

If you have a spare Raspberry Pi or similar gathering dust you might consider Plexamp headless (with or without a DAC). It can be controlled from its web interface or another Plexamp installation (mobile or desktop). I’ve found Plexamp headless to be an excellent way of getting music where I want it.

I can run Plex on my Android TV, but I’ve had difficulty with playing it on both my computer and my TV and it staying in sync, or even being able to move the audio back to my desktop after it was playing on the TV.

I’m not suggesting you run the Plex app on a set top box, rather Plexamp headless on a small ARM-based computer (Raspberry Pi or similar). It was designed for your use case (remotely controlled Plexamp feeding some 3rd-party equipment).

Yes I understand that’s what you mean, my point is that I already have Plex on multiple devices but the simulcasting doesn’t work well for what I want, and I’m skeptical that running the headless version would work any better for my needs.

Plexamp (and Plexamp headless) and the Plex app are completely separate beasts. Plexamp headless was designed to be controlled from other Plexamp instances. It’s as simple as selecting the player in the controlling Plexamp:

You can move them back and forth as much as you want. I only have two Plexamps running right now (my Mac and my headless) but I can move the audio between them at well. As it was designed to do.

I see that same remote-player UI on the Plex app on my Android TV, but also you’re suggesting that I add more hardware to my setup while that hardware also won’t be as seamless as simply setting my output source in AirPlay which automatically sets my stereo up with CEC, not to mention all of my smart speakers that support AirPlay but don’t have 3.5mm input jacks or the like.

It’s possibly a reasonable solution for some people but it’s not what I’m looking for. Thanks though.
