I have noticed an issue when using plexamp in android auto.
I’m playing music over Bluetooth to the car. I also have Google maps navigation running.
After 2 or 3 tracks into my journey one song finishes and the next fails to start. I just get the spinning circle on the play/pause button.
Sometimes hitting skip back then forward will fix it but only for 1 or 2 more tracks. (not always though)
Sometimes I have to close AA and PA completely and start again…not the safest when driving.
It still shows the song that’s just played with the progress bar at the end, like it’s hanging and can’t find the next track.
First I thought it was cell signal/buffering issue but the skip forward shed doubt on that.
Then thought it was sweet fades. Nope, turned that off, no cure.
It doesn’t happen at all when I’m playing downloaded music.
Also doesn’t happen if I just use plexamp without android auto.
Also, I usually play a mood station. (love these BTW)
Has anyone else seen this or can anyone recreate it? It’s a pretty specific issue but makes it borderline unusable.
@elan, any thoughts?
I feel like now I’ve typed this that it should be an new thread.
I have almost the exact same experience. Galaxy Note 9, 2020 Toyota Head Unit.
- Cant use voice. I get the same error message “Sorry, something went wrong. Please try opening the app to continue.” Similar commands work for other Android Auto apps (ie. NPR One) - This is the real deal-breaker/issue. I need to be able to use voice to safely operate.
- List menus incomplete. Not an issue if I can use voice.
- Repeat album. Would be nice, but not a must.
- Album art. I have seen the album art for a song I played 3 tracks ago randomly appear.
One other issue - Artist Radio is sometimes missing. When opening an artists album list, I never consistently get the option for the Artist Radio station. This is a feature i use very often on Plexamp on my phone.
I do love Plexamp and hope that the above issues can be resolved for Android Auto (mainly the voice integration). Thanks again for adding such a great companion for those with music libraries.
Hey @jc4thirty and @lwd7237,
I don’t have answers re. the voice search, and don’t have an Android Auto car to test with, but hopefully I can provide some clues to the other issues you’re seeing.
Re. partial lists, my understanding is that some head units impose a list-size limitation when the car is in motion as a safety precaution. This explains why when you’re parked in the garage, you’re seeing complete lists. Android Auto apps (like Plexamp) have zero control over this behaviour, unfortunately.
Re. repeat mode. Good news: it’s on the list for a future update! I don’t have a timeframe on this, however.
Re. album art switching. There have been some improvements to album art behaviour in the next release that
may improve things, but my understanding is that this is primarily a bug in Android Auto, as other players exhibit the same behaviour.
Thanks for info.
That all makes sense, and the partial lists is a non-issue if the voice works. Looking forward to the updates to make the product even better.
RE: the album art switching - this issue is very bad for me. It happens maybe 15 times or more per song and it can be quite distracting while driving. I do not get this behavior when using the main Plex app, so I’m not sure it’s strictly an AA bug.
While I can’t always pay close attention while driving, it seems to me that the “wrong” album art that gets displayed periodically is always album covers from a playlist I synced to my phone (regardless of whether that’s the list I’m playing or not - I could be playing any content, but the “wrong” album art that pops up will be from that single synced playlist).
I’m happy to try betas or get logs, ect if there is anything I can do to help.
Even in an excellent context, the “album” folder would be appreciated
it sounds like the track is buffering, perhaps because it can’t connect to the server, or some other issue. hard to say without logs.
I was all set to send log file yesterday when the update landed.
Thought I’d give it a try first. Managed 90 mins without issue so hoping this one’s disappeared.
Love the update BTW. Casting, car mode, always on screen. Sweet.
Another one with the voice search issue on AA. Any word as to timeline for a potential fix?
not sure what exactly the voice search issue is. what exactly are you doing, and can you post plexamp log?
I’m having the same issue with AA voice search I say play the rolling stones she said asking plexamp to play the rolling Stones and then Sorry, something went wrong. Is there any fix for this yet. I want to use plexamp be not without voice commands.
not sure what the issue would be from the description, can you issue the command, wait for the error, and then post Plexamp logs? (settings > advanced > debugging)
Here’s the log but i’m not sure if the request is making it the plexamp or not… Google assistant tells me she is making the request and then says there was a problem try opening the app and try again so it may be a google assistant problem… but I have read on here that others are having the same thing happening, Hope we can find the root of the problem

hmm, i’m not sure i see the search request coming in. can you explain exactly how you’re making it? afaik we only support it via android auto proper and not google assistant generally.
That is were i’m making the request in android auto.
Here’s a short video for what it is doing. Thanks.

What if you say “Stroke 9”? (i.e. leave out the “Play” bit)
@aubrey.wodonga, thanks for the info!
Unfortunately, I became so disenchanted with Plexamp that I finally subscribed to Spotify just to have something that works in the car. I understand the rationale behind the partial lists, if that’s the issue, but unless voice search works through Google Assistant it’s completely a no-go. And for me it doesn’t. Hopefully someday I’ll try it again because I use Plexamp a lot when I’m at home or work.
Im not sure if this is a undocumented improvement in the latest 3.3.2 release, but my Google Assistant in AA is now working perfectly for Plexamp. I’ve tried “shuffle music by (artist)” and “Play (Song) by (Artist)” and its worked as expected.
awesome, we made a few tweaks to try to improve, glad it’s working!
Even in an excellent context, the “album” folder would be appreciated
Seconded. I primarily sort by album, and it looks like there’s absolutely no way to access a list of Albums from the library function for Plexamp within Android Auto.
