Plexamp crashing in android auto

Plexamp has been crashing on Android auto for about a month now. The app would crash after playing a few songs and mixing up the album artwork. Next the screen would flash black and I would have an error message saying that the app stopped working. Does anyone have a fix? I’m running PMS on a raspberry pi 4 with 2 gb of ram.

There’s no way I know of that an app should be able to to crash Android Auto :frowning: And unfortunately there’s no easy to way to tell why AA is crashing unless there’s something suspicious in logcat.

Sorry, I had a typo in my post. Plexamp is crashing while android auto is running. It seems to be reduced when I disable wireless android auto in android auto’s settings.

I’m not seeing any crash reports. Any chance you have battery optimization turned on for Plexamp? If so, try turning it off and see if that makes a difference.

Battery optimization is turned off for plexamp. I tried sending the logs from the app but the file format is unsupported. The app usually stutters after about 15 minutes of playback and crashes with an error code saying that plexamp doesn’t seem to be working.

I just checked again and I don’t see any crash reports from you. I don’t suppose you have access to logcat on the device?

I’m not sure how to use logcat on my phone I’ll try and figure it out.

I wasn’t sure how to properly export the logs hopefully this has what you need. I was only able to get the problem to reproduce when i was connected to LTE and skipped a bunch of songs.

I just want to add that I’ve also been encountering the same issues. I’m not sure if it’s coincidence or a potential lead but I have noticed more than once that when it crashes, I’m getting a notification for another app (various apps not just one specific app).

Not seeing any obvious crashes, but we’ve fixed a few in the next release so let’s :crossed_fingers: your issue is resolved. If not, please let us know.

Same issues as everyone else above. Which version number are we awaiting release to see if this is addressed and when are you expecting it to release?

v3.7. soon.

Just installed today along with the latest Android auto. Issue is still occuring with both my pixel 3 xl and my wife’s pixel 5. 3 different stereos (2 Sony and 1 pioneer). What details can I be provide to see if by chance I can get you some helpful logs? I work in IT, so I’ll start seeing if on I can determine any patterns or steps to reproduce said no issue, but it’s like every 2-3 songs currently and only when using Android auto. On my phone and desktop, no issues.

I’m not seeing any crashes from you (perhaps not helped by the fact that your Plex username has a space it).

Do you have ability to get logcat off device? Can you post Plexamp logs right after it crashes?

I updated my username, so let’s see if that helps. I’ll try pulling some logs tomorrow if I can. Otherwise will look to repo and document the best I can.

Thanks, appreciate the help as we haven’t been able to reproduce an issue over here.

Totally understand, difficult to fix what you can’t see!

Attached are the logcat logs from my device (Pixel 3 XL on a Sony XAV-AX7000) both running latest software/firmware (I can confirm version numbers if needed). I’ve also attached a debug logs from within Plexamp itself.

In the span of about 5 minutes I was able to reproduce the issue twice. Specifically, here is what I am seeing (and i’ll attempt to get a photo/video if I can later). I do not currently have any music downloaded to my device, so this is strictly streaming.

I am on the main now playing screen listening to music and advancing through songs I don’t want to listen to right now. The center portion of the screen goes black and then a message appears that says saying an error has occured (going to get a screenshot of this ASAP for exact text) . After 20-30 seconds, I am returned to the pelxamp main homescreen with the now playing button clearly dispalyed to the left right where I had left off, but the music does not auto resume.

I did some testing, and keeping in mind I am only streaming at the moment, it seems that when I start a playlist I can disconnect from LTE and Wifi and still play quite a few songs within plexamp as if they were cached on the device. Evetually though, I find a song that won’t play (due to it likely not being cached) and I received a similar error as described above. I’ll try to gather some more info, but this could make sense. The area I live in has lots of trees and hills, both of which lead to momentairy to brief lapses in connectivity (1-2 minutes) while driving. I would expect it to stop playing when it cannot stream the content, but in my inital testing, it seems this may result in the same/similar message indicated above.

More info to come, but if you see anything helpful in either of the attached logs, please let me know or if you would like me to test anything specifics, I can do that too.

Thanks!

2 more logcat files with actual errors in them. I cannot 100% say this is exactly the same issue as i’ll be honest, sitting in my garage with good wifi and decent LTE seems to result in things working as expected, but I think that supports that its something to do with Caching/streaming of content.

The exact text of the error is “Plexamp doesn’t seem to be working right now” with an exclamation point. If left alone, I am returned to the Plexamp home menu after about 20-30 seconds and logcat appears to be returning errors in those situations.

I recorded 40 minutes of video and nautrally the issue didn’t occur until I stopped recording!

A few observations:

  • Plexamp does appear to be caching songs that i’ve not yet listened to on the device. I can’t pinpoint this, but I can confirm if I start up a playlist with songs i’ve never listend to, wait a minute or two, disable wifi/lte, the following X number of songs are still playable (though without album art).
  • Plexamp seems to keep cached songs from beyond the current play session. Songs that i’ve not listed to in days appear to still be playable despite keeping internet disabled on my mobile device

I’m wondering if we aren’t running into some issues with some of said cached content perhaps loading a bad section of the song, and then in a subsequent playback, it hits that bad section and crashes.

Components resulting in errors in the logs below across these 2 crashes:

  • [09-09 12:09:32.570 2146:2200 E/MediaBrowser]
  • [09-09 12:09:32.572 2146:2200 E/MediaResumeListener]
  • [09-09 12:09:32.770 6269:6269 E/SoLoader]

I’ll let you view the actual logs for details on each issue as well as the relevant debug details.

I’ll continue to investigate and see if I can find any additional data to assist.

Thanks!

We’ve looked through your logs, and we’re still a bit confused. @SamFromPlex will follow up with more questions.

I’ve tested the scenario of cellular and wifi disabled and everything works as expected, could it be that when this error happens your cell signal is in a “will they won’t they state”. i.e. very low signal that can’t transmit data but the phone thinks it can, so it keeps trying?
