I’m getting audio artifacts when playing audio through bluetooth on my Pixel 6 Pro (also had same issue on a Pixel 3XL previously). I’ve tried with streamed and downloaded audio, tried different bit rate audio and both OpenSL ES and A Audio and can’t seem to shake the issue. I’m not getting any issues whatsoever with Spotify, or any other streaming platform, just plexamp. It’s driving me crazy as plexamp is by far the best player I’ve used.
Huh, weird. I’ve heard of AAudio making a difference, so make sure you restart between playing, but otherwise I’m befuddled. Make sure you don’t have any battery optimization things set.
I’ve restarted the phone after each settings change to make sure things update neatly. I thought it might be the large WAV files I’m playing as it happens most with them, but I’ve converted all of them to mp3 tonight and it is still happening.
I have narrowed it down to bluetooth headphones only though, it doesn’t happen in the car via bluetooth or Android Auto, I’m wondering if it could be some buffer issue with larger files, but apart from that I’m at a loss. It’s so frustrating!
Yes, I have a pair of Sennheiser’s and a pair of cheap Anker buds and it happens with them too. I’m actually listening to the exact same audio file using the Mixcloud app on the same Bose headphones now and am not having any issues, which kind of suggests it has to be related to Plexamp (please don’t think I’m pointing fingers I’m just using a process of elimination).
Could it be related to the size of the audio file? As these are continuous mixes the files are obviously larger than single tracks. I’ve probably answered my own question as the issue does not occur with single tracks at all, just these large files. I thought converting to mp3 may reduce the file size enough to make a difference, but it has not.
Found some info on Reddit suggesting to turn off A2DP offload through the developer menu on the Pixel 6. I’ve now done this and initial listening is much better (I’ll jinx it now I’ve said this!) I’ll keep listening through the night and report back if it resolves the issue as it may help someone else with the same problem.
Well this seems to have fixed the issue. Very strange one, but so glad it’s sorted. Thanks, as always for your help. I hope this thread can help someone else with the same issue.
Chiming in as another Pixel user that around the time my Pixel 4a updated to Android 12 in the last few weeks, I noticed the crackling/popping sounds using OpenSL. I can’t say this was the exact cause but it seemed to be more timed with a Google update than a Plexamp one.
It used to be prior to very recently that OpenSL was perfect, and AAudio sounded thin in comparison. I tried AAudio again very recently trying to solve the crackling audio issue and the quality sounds identical enough to OpenSL but without the sound issues.
