Plexamp Carplay randomly exits the "Now Playing" screen

I’m using latest server and Plexamp versions, on iPhone 13 Pro, everything up to date. My car is a 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Limited.

Very often, I will start playback on Plexamp in Carplay and without me touching my phone or any controls my my car, it exits the Now Playing screen and shows either a mostly blank screen that says only “Shuffle” on the top line (FYI, I don’t have Shuffle mode enabled in Plexamp), or it goes back to the Plexamp Home screen which shows Mixes For You, Recent Plays, Recently Added, etc. I have to click the triangle button in the top right of the screen to go back to Now Playing.

No other audio app in Carplay does this. Not Tidal, not Apple Music, not Spotify, not SiriusXM. If I put any of these apps on the Now Playing screen it stays there. Only Plexamp will randomly exit Now Playing.

Any other users seeing this? Can the developers confirm this is an issue?

never heard of this and not sure how we’d do this even if we wanted to

Upon further investigation it seems to happen when the internet connection changes between wifi and cellular. For example, when I drive away from my house and lose wifi. I’ve also had it happen when not near my home, and I don’t have my phone set to automatically connect to any public wifi. So for whatever reason Plexamp CarPlay seems super sensitive to even a split second interruption in the network.

I’ve been able to replicate it by being connected to cellular (Verizon LTE, 30Mbps) and toggling the Wifi on and off. It seems to happen whether or not the Wifi actually connected to anything.

To recap, when this happens the CarPlay screen on my dash changes from Now Plauing to either Shuffle or Home. See screenshots:

I hope you guys can fix this!

ah, i see what it’s doing, it’s not switching to shuffle, it’s switching to the Downloads tab. You just don’t have anything downloaded. It’s doing this because when it loses connectivity it can’t access the server.

Please post the logs, as it should only do that if it completely loses connectivity, not just jumps from wi-fi to lte and back.

Usually it switches from Now Playing to Home or Downloads as I pull out of the driveway and my phone switches from Wi-Fi to LTE when the Wi-Fi signal drops off (this must be a common scenario, no?), but today it did it as I was driving down the road nowhere near Wi-Fi (and my phone isn’t set to auto-connect to any public networks, or any networks other than my home). The Verizon LTE connection was 4-5 bars.

This happened around 9:11 am today so I’m including a min before and after that in the logs. The second half is in the next post. Thanks for the help!

Sorry, as far as I know this is somewhat “normal” behavior when Internet connectivity glitches on your phone. Apple’s guidelines say that the app should adjust the menus when connectivity is lost and restored.

I would think it’s possible to program Plexamp such that the connectivity must be lost for some reasonable amount of time before anything happens? Like… 5 seconds? Because it’s only losing the connection for 1 second or less, and none of my other audio apps do anything when the phone transitions from WiFi to cellular (not Spotify, XM, Tidal, Apple Music…).

TBH, it’s really quite annoying for Plexamp to switch Carplay away from the Now Playing screen automatically for any reason at all. There must be some relatively straightforward way for you to prevent this?

The same happens to me. The ‘now playing’ screen disappears randomly and other screens appear. I never have playback disruptions so in my view this should not happen if cellular is briefly interrupted. Could this please be fixed?

Seems like this won’t be fixed. I don’t know why Plex thinks it’s a good idea to automatically switch away from the Now Playing screen for any reason whatsoever. It’s bad UX, and no other audio app that I’ve ever used on my iPhone does this. If I’m on the Now Playing screen, I want it to stay there, regardless of whether my network connection glitches out for a split second. If the music stops playing because the networked is borked, I’ll take action myself.

Don’t assume that. CarPlay specifically tells developers to react to changes in connectivity.

It’s not “for any reason”, it’s “for loss of internet connectivity”.

We’ll see if we can make this less jarring.

Thanks for the further insight. I think if you guys just program it to wait 10 seconds before determining that connectivity is actually lost, that would fix it. As it is, it seems like it freaks out if the connection is lost for less than 1 second while I pull out of my driveway and my phone loses the WiFi signal and switches to cellular. Or if for whatever reason my cellular connection drops for a few seconds before picking up another tower.

I’ve tried to think about it from your point of view as the developer, but I just don’t see how it makes sense to switch away from the Now Playing screen unless Plexamp has actually run out of buffered music to play (IIRC, it buffers several minutes worth of playback at all times, no?). In my mind, it should only interrupt me if the network is truly down for a significant amount of time AND it’s run out of music in the buffer.

You act like we’re purposefully doing it. We’re not.

We’re telling CarPlay to use a new menu structure for offline, which has the unfortunate side effect of popping out of Now Playing. Blame the primitive CarPlay API

Thanks for the reactions! For countries where mobile phone coverage is not perfect, this is really a bit of a pain. Just had it again on my way back from holidays. It would be great if you can program this differently
On other streaming apps, e.g. TuneIn Radio, I think it just “pauses” when out of connectivity/buffer. Buffer seems to be not a real issue for PlexAmp so somehow ignoring this loss of connectivity until buffer runs out could be “simple”. Maybe just showing a kind of warning icon?
Maybe related, maybe not (I will read again other related posts). After a certain duration of driving and playing (random duration), the music playback gets distorted (like a cracking) - regularly… The only solution I have is to shut down Plexamp and relaunch. But this is not a really healthy option while driving… Hope this will get investigated.

Maybe the easiest solution for this is for Plexamp to automatically go back to the Now Playing screen once connectivity is restored? Surely that’s as easy to code as the code that switches it away from the Now Playing when it loses connectivity?
