[Plexamp] Download Artist Discography option is missing

Where is the option to download a whole discography? You only get ‘Artist Radio’ and ‘Artist Shuffle’. Artist radio includes other artists and shuffle doesn’t let you choose only a specific downloaded album to listen too. You have to play the shuffle. It makes you select download on each individual album. Then you go to the downloads page and it is a gigantic list of random albums instead of broken up into Artist then Album submenu system.

I get it Plexamp is designed around an auto generated playlist system Plex calls Radios. Not everyone is a playlist kind of person… We need to be able to download an entire Artist. Then go to the downloads page and see a list of downloaded artist. Be able to select that artist and see a list of downloaded albums.

Plexamp was such a big step forward with music and something I have been dreaming about for so many years then here I am and now I need to take a step back to the Plex app again when I don’t have an LTE connection. So that I am not forced into a way of listening to music that Plex thinks is best.

Downloading your entire library has already been mentioned to not be possible due to how the download system works but on Plexamp you can do an Artist shuffle for 8 hours so why can’t I download the entire Artist?

+1 would love to be able to download an artist instead of going album by album.

Main reason why we didn’t add this is because in general the download system wasn’t designed to hold a gazillion tracks. However, I guess 24 hours of a playlist is about 24 albums, so we’ll look into supporting this in the future when we support browsing into downloads.

What specifically is the problem? The number of files per download or the total number of files downloaded. If it is the former wouldn’t you be able to split a single download into batches that it completes one after another? If it is the latter wouldn’t it still be a problem with someone that downloads a ton of 24-hour playlists?

I’ve been around a while and it seems the download system has been a headache since it was implemented. Is it something on the to-do list to re-build from scratch or just the reality of what is possible on a certain platform and not a limitation of design?

I dunno, many people think it’s working just fine :grimacing:

We’ll definitely be enhancing it in the future, but clearly there are a lot of things on the list which are higher priority (like Chromecast) and not least because, again, it works pretty well for most scenarios.

Am I crazy? I thought the download artist option was available when browsing by artist was introduced. I am pretty sure I was able to download the artist discography a few months ago on my old phone. But the option is not there anymore.

Could we see the 24hr limit as an option in advanced settings? Provided Plexamp added downloading artists I have several with more than 24hrs of music and it would be nice to bump it to 48hr or no limit even.

Also regarding gazillions of songs with large numbers of downloads (entire libraries etc) are you talking strictly not being designed for it as in UI issues managing that many or is there any performance problems you’ve encountered? I currently have 7263 tracks or roughly 26 days of music downloaded on Plexamp on an iPhone XR with a smart playlist per artist and per decade playlists for artists in excess of 24hr each. So far I haven’t experienced any performance degradation. Snappy as it was before I downloaded anything so I’m rather impressed how well it’s handled it. Honestly seems more reliable than Plex and the Sync feature so far.

It’s mostly a performance thing. In the future we’ll look to upgrade the system and remove limits.

If there is a performance limitation can I suggest allowing selecting a few albums to be queued for download. Invariably I find that I’m not wanting the whole discography and but just selected core albums leaving behind the 90’s CD singles with the 5 remixes of the same track.

Anyway, so far 24 hours in having found Plexamp via John Darko YouTube, I am extremely impressed especially in CarPlay, which unlike Tidal, works flawlessly.

+1 for this. I’ve been a Plex user for years, moved to Plexamp a month ago after Google decided to EOL Google Play Music (and I tried the horrilbe YouTube Music). Plexamp has been a great replacement.
