I acknowledge that what I am proposing might interrupt data analytics revenue streams (if that’s an issue). If so, I would like to suggest that folks like me would probably be willing to buy around the problem if Plex were to give us the option.
For the purpose of discussion, I will call my proposal Plexamp’s “sandbox” edition:
There are many areas of the country without cell coverage and/or internet access. In addition to all of the recreational enthusiast that leave cell coverage on purpose (cabin owners, overland/RV campers, motorcycle tourist to name a few) the USDA indicates that 25% American farms don’t have internet.
Shouldn’t people be able to bring all of their music with them without having to choose ahead of time?
Currently I am using an intel Gemini lake Celeron mini PC with a 2Tb drive as a headless server. I am working through a re-build with Ubuntu (trying eliminate the router by going ad-hoc wifi) and an old Android phone dedicated for the purpose.
In theory, I should be able to plug the mini PC into the car’s power port and enjoy full access to all the digital music I have purchased over my lifetime (with all of the awesome features I have come to enjoy from plexamp) without any connection to the outside world.
Sure, I would have to re-connect to the internet when I want to add newly purchased content to the library. If, however I forget the server at a friend’s snow cabin for 3 seasons in a row, it should still work on the 4th season (I bought all of the music, right?).
Certainly, I can’t be the only person who has though about running a music server in their car without internet. Why does the setup only work with the full Plex app and not the Plexamp app?
Thank you!
