Why Plexamp unusable to me on windows

So far what make Plexamp broken for me on windows:

  • Impossible to browse library easily (or u need to go to “recently added…” and it needs 5 clicks , and yet your choice to browse artist or album is not remembered)

  • Impossible to use chromecast

  • Impossible to close app, (except right clicking taskar, come on is that an user experience?)

  • Impossible to adjust volume (i understand that on android, but on a desktop app, come on…)

  • No integration with windows volume overlay like any other audio app

  • No support for multimedia keys

  • When clicking search at bottom, you then have to click the search box all the way up to the top of screen; one click on search icon and you should be able to type your search

Having possibility to re-arrange home screen and browse by artist, albums, folders and volume control UI are a no-go to me

Why on earth you would use plexamp in fullscreen? Did you use the old Plexamp before?

Plexamp is not a port from mobile to desktop, but from desktop to mobile.

The impossibility to directly browse the library is intended for plexamp. Use search, the radios or the playlists.

However indeed there are some features missing from the new version, that worked in the old one:

  • Hardware Multimedia keys
  • Media control in the taskbar preview
  • Volume control

I’m hoping they add this back in.

+1 for the fullscreen thing, tried to put it docked on the side with another music player taking rest of screen and it is actually ok; it is just not a traditional desktop app i can get it (edited my post about this)

Having acces to browse librrary on home is a still a no-go for me, along with volume control.

Big +1 to lack of multimedia keys. That’s the #1 reason I want to use a desktop app instead of the browser. That’s a hard blocker for me using PlexAmp unfortunately.

Yep its not traditional at all. Sometimes I draw the windows that small, that it only shows cover and trackname (window on top).

You mean access like a list of all artists? I’m totally fine with the search, works great (also remembers your choice etc.)

Yes and more importantly the ability to browse by folders; i have my library arranged by styles/sub-styles/artist/album

Just having possibility in settings to add browse by folders to home screen (and add-remove sections an reorder them) and it would be great

Add volume, multimedia keys, chromecast and 1 click for searching and it would be perfect for me

Sorry, but why aren’t you using the metadata in the track as opposed to trying to shoehorn this into your folder structure? This seems counter intuitive. The whole point of this app is to leverage Plex’s media matching to provide a rich experience. If you want to use folder browsing perhaps there’s a different tool that would work better?

Click search icon a second time for search box to be ‘selected’ and ready to enter text. So one time to load search page, 2nd time to focus on search bar

search + mixbuilder! no need for navigating library structure

What do you mean by mixbuilder?

For a full browsing via metadata you need to have very consitent and complete meta data i believe, it maybe ok for libraries of stuff already properly tagged

i have a 1To+ library, hundreds of owned cd I started ripping 25 years ago, plus various downloaded and legal stuff; many time an artist name will not be written exactly the same across those different files, from different sources.

Plus i have many Underground stuff that aren’t in any database; not mentioning the splits albums, the compilations, ect… Finding precisly what I want is so much faster for me navigating the file structure that I created

Time needed to update metadata meticulously on all the oldest file, even with tagging software would be very time consuming but i agree it would be great but not perfect (again, split albums, featurings, compilations…)

I think giving the choice to use both would be nice and it seems possible; just add a shorcut to “browse by” on the home screen, and give possibilty to enable/disable it and voila everybody is happy

I see few artist i recently played in the mix builder (6 out of 600+), and when i click an artist it just give me a list of other related artist.

All I want is find a particular record quickly, not add an artist to a mix?
I’m used to using multimedia softwares but here I just don’t understand anything at what this mix builder does.

Can you explain me how i can quickly find that album from that artist quickly with it?

Plexamp is not a port from mobile to desktop, but from desktop to mobile.

It historically was, but currently it is only the mobile app on the desktop. And yes, I did try earlier versions of Plexamp on the desktop before they got the mobile.

While the content (stations, playlists, etc) is fine and is what it distincts it from the full Plex app, the usability is not. Immediately after starting you see the mobile phone layout and resizing just does not look right in other sizes (look at the menu …). It’s just ridiculous not having a close button …

I would suggest to keep it as a mobile app (which is great!) and maybe extend the plex desktop app for some functionality. The other way would be to break the common UI and make a decent desktop branch.

Just my two cents.

+1 on the media controls in the taskbar preview, I really miss that.

Can’t agree here. I respect that plexamp is not supposed to be a traditional player and I’m fine with the absence of a traditional browse. However, whoever thought to implement a library selector in settings but to then have search ignore the selector such that if you have multiple versions of artists or albums in different libraries and you search for them, it brings up every one with NO indication as to which duplicate album/artist listing correlates to which library is clearly wasn’t thinking things through.

And finally, they add an option to browse music that actually respects the library setting. Nice. Seems I wasn’t alone in that boat.

as much as i love plexamp for android (so far, haven’t tried yet how the offline part works, what is a big pain of the plex mobile app) i am confused by the windows version. i am not sure what this “mobile app in a window” is supposed to be. i’d rather stick with the web ui, but hoping for a more functional windows app in the future

What if you don’t want to search, but instead want to randomly shuffle through your library? There appears to be no way to do this, or even to get to a library window. WTF? It’s a crying shame, since I really like the audio quality of Plexamp, but its user-interface is for ■■■■■.

Library radio will randomly play tracks from your library, have you tried that?

Only with the workaround to create a smart playlist of your whole library.

There is now an ‘All Music’ item at the very top.
