I woke up this morning with the goal of consolidating all of my media to my plex server, starting with music, so this was a great surprise! I have been using Plexamp all morning and it has been great. Little glitches here and there but otherwise, fantastic.
My only wish was some sort of local caching so that there was limited use when disconnected from my server and to limit bandwidth impact. Ideally something like the iOS app’s “download” option, but really just caching the current playlist or last N songs for repeated plays would be sufficient.
Also as a side effect I have become oddly nostalgic for both WinAmp and BeOS sheds a tear.
Actually when you mentioned the local cache/playlist save I instantly thought of my old usage of Spotify. Spotify allows you to download a playlist or several based on the amount of local cache storage you have. Count me in! I like the idea of clicking on a download sync button to cache a specific playlist too.
We try to read ahead on the current track and keep a pretty large memory cache, but we don’t currently save anything to disk, as that would be fairly tricky, especially because you sort of have simple read-ahead caching on one side, full sync on the other, and an uncanny valley in the middle in terms of functionality
