Plexamp - multiple music libraries on same server

Trying out the new Plexamp app on my Pixel 3 and so far I like the nice clean interface.!

One annoyance I’ve found though is that you can only have one source at a time and each library is a different source, even if on the same server. On my server I have my “regular” (pop, rock, etc) and anime/j-pop music in separate libraries to not clutter it up for my users who aren’t into anime like I am. But it seems like I can only select one at a time, so if I just want to do a big mashup/shuffle of everything including a mix of both anime and regular music, it doesn’t seem like I can.

Is there any way to allow to set multiple libraries, or at least all libraries on a single server, as the source? If I have a playlist that spans more than library, will it only play music off the one that is currently the “source”?

its not the same thing, but plexamp will pull in tidal audio to augment your music library (if you are a linked tidal subscriber).

but yes, multiple source libraries would be a great addition (ie multiple libraries from same, or from shared servers).

Only if the library are on a different server which are shared with your account. i.e. if you are playing some Artist Radio and your friend happens to have music from a related band on his server, some of it will be thrown in.
Same applies to material from Tidal.
But I’m not aware of the ability to combine several of your own libraries.

library-spanning playlists should work though

I created a test playlist that had a song from each of my separate music libraries and it does show up when I have either source picked, as well as play the music from both of them, which is nice. But Plexamp still only show playlists that include music from your current source library. So when I have my regular music library selected as a source I can’t see my playlist for an anime only playlist I’ve created, and vice versa.

It would be nice to be able to access all my music on a single server at once without having to go into Settings and change my source library any time I want to hear a different type of music.

Totally agree with you, having to go to settings each time to switch to a library + not being able to browse it like you want (by artist or albums) is weird.

Totally agree - I am really enjoying the new amp (more than the original desktop only version).
However library spanning and, selective library spanning, would be really good.
I have 4 libraries English, Foreign, Classical and Spoken (though could image also having a 5th one for Musicals/Opera) - would love to choose which of my libraries should be span across (e.g. simple checkmark against which to include).

I really have little interest in pulling in music from other sources (e.g. friends, tidal, etc).

I have the same problem. I have sixteen music libraries on my four-drive NAS that is dedicated to my music collection. Switching libraries in Settings is too awkward and too limited. I also don’t use Tidal or have friends who share their Plex data with me.

There is always the possibility to creating a new library where you combine all your music. I have done this on a small scale: Kids Music, Music (Kids Music + more), Classical Music, and All Music (Kids Music, Music, Classical). Just a thought. Hope that helps.

I thought about that. I’m worried about machine resources. Plex can have problems when the libraries get large. My NAS may be under powered, too. I only use if for music because I’m guessing that music requires less server power.

Could you give it a try and see how it works? And report back to let us know if it works as expected? Just curious. Thanks.

I mean, sure it would work. It is a solution. Just not a good solution, in my opinion.

I don’t want to have to cluster up and make my libraries more confusing by having the same music in multiple different spots. It would be easier and less confusing to just have check boxes to select multiple libraries rather than only one at a time. The main Plex app already even allows you to see multiple.

Sorry for the late reply.

I already know that Plex Server can fail when the size of the music collection is large, and mine s huge–and growing. I do not know if that is a problem with Plex or my hardware. The NAS that I use to store my music collection has only 4 GB of RAM, so it could be a resource problem. I also know, however, that a friend who has a large collection also encountered the same problem.

I don’t see a reason to change what I’m doing now, because I have decided that Plexamp isn’t for me. It doesn’t add any capability that I don’t already have. It appears to be a nice desktop app, but I don’t use a desktop computer very often these days.

It is an even nicer mobile app. It was designed with “mobile first” in mind.

Really? I haven’t tried using it on my phone. I didn’t even realize that there is an Android version. I could try it, but the lack of easy library access is still a problem for me. I’m thinking that Plexamp is targeted to a different – maybe younger? – group of folks.

“Browsing library” was just added, due to popular request.
That being said, it is still not what Plexamp is trying to do. With a large library, you spend too much time browsing – only to end up with always the same artists or albums in many instances. (sounding familiar?)

The automatic playlist generation of Plexamp is trying to break free of this. Hence why library browsing wasn’t put front and center from the start.

Try it out on your phone. You already have a Plex Pass, so you can use it.

Well, that’s interesting! Send a thanks to the team for listening to us ordinary folks.

I will load it to my phone and give it a try. I don’t have my phone with me at the moment, so I’ll do it later.

I don’t wish to be argumentative, especially before 6:00 AM and before my morning coffee, but no, that doesn’t sound familiar. In fact, I bristle with discontent when automated programs create limitations for me. This is the musical equivalent of the “information filter bubble” that narrows and divides us all. Suffice to say, I don’t like that. So call me a Luddite if you wish.

We tend to be very eclectic in our music listening. We like it that way. Our typical listening style is to use a Roku Ultra that is connected to a 7.2 sound system that most folks describe as “impressive.” (We also have a Windows-based media server connected to the same system. Our Plex music server is on a Linux system.)
