Plexamp on Android device will only connect to my PMS after I turn off my VPN

My problem is pretty simple. My Plex server running on a windows 10 desktop is working perfectly in every situation but one. At some point over this summer, Plexamp stopped working for me when I have turned on my VPN on my samsung galaxy S8, regardless of whether I’m on my home network or not. The Plex app itself still works on the phone, regardless of vpn setting.

It’s really that simple… turn the vpn on and plexamp stops working. Turn it off and it starts working again. Plex app works, Samsung TV app works, laptop works… literally every other PMS situation works. I’ve tried changing my vpn to a half dozen different IPs, none work. I have not made any changes to my vpn otherwise, and as I’ve said, the Android Plex App itself on the phone works under every circumstance.

Has the Plexamp app started blocking IP ranges or something? Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this or what is going on?

To clarify, when I say the ap doesn’t work, I mean it won’t connect to the PMS. The app itself does boot.

Post some Plexamp logs so we can see what IPs it’s trying to hit. You can alter that by publishing custom access URLs via server preference.

There’s something going on with your VPN, maybe it’s blocking our DNS or some sort of rebind protection?

With private IP addresses (e.g. 10.x) or IPv6 we don’t need DNS to work, since you redacted the log I can’t tell anything else.

Thank you for the reply, it’s very much appreciated. A couple points of information:

The only thing redacted from the logs is my personal IP address. I’d be happy to DM you that if you think it would help you address the issue.

I agree that there is something going on with my VPN and the way it is interacting with Plexamp, but the change was on plexamp’s end, because, of the two, that was the only app that I updated in the time frame in question. Any rebinding protection that was enabled on my vpn app would have been enabled back when plexamp was working a number of weeks ago. As I mentioned, the Plex app still works perfectly through the VPN on a non-local network. Is plexamp not using the same DNS as Plex? Is there something that happened in a recent update that could cause an error like this:

What would be a “working” answer to “type is vpn → UNKNOWN (undefined)”?

Lastly, my PMS is configured to allow IPv6 connections, as is my network adapter on the desktop acting as a server, so that option is there to bypass any failed DNS communication, if I’m properly understanding what you propose. I hope these notes help eliminate some of the possiblities causing this error.

Does any of this new information help shed light on possible solutions? Is there anything else I can provide to help with this troubleshooting?

I don’t think the network type logs are meaningful here. Please DM me the actual address in question.

We made a few small changes in recent months, mostly around not side-stepping system DNS resolution for IPv6 or WAN addresses (to solve other issues).
