PLEXAMP / PLEX : Genre to support comma delimited value // MOD: embedded mp3 metadata

Hi,

I think it would be nice if say the Genre metadata field for music could support comma delimited values. For example if an album is tagged as Soul, Disco. I would like it to go into the Soul and Disco bucket not create a genre called Soul, Disco and place it there. Here is screen shot of how it currently looks in plexamp

I take it this is for genres from embedded metadata?

No screen shot appears.

I thought it was delimited by the “;” semicolon.

I think so too… w/ ID3 some tags are supposed to support multiple values per tag which should be separated by /, though many apps seem to support semicolon-separated values too.

yes this would be for the genres ID3 tag. do i need to replace the “,” with a “/” to get the expected results?

Just tested this myself.
Plex is recognizing comma and slash separated genres as single tags. Semicolons didn’t work for me.

  • Comedy, Sci-Fi, Action results in Comedy + Sci-Fi + Action (3 genre tags)
  • Comedy/Sci-Fi/Action results in Comedy + Sci-Fi + Action (3 genre tags)
  • Comedy; Sci-Fi; Action results in Comedy; Sci-Fi; Action (1 genre tag)

While I did my test with a movie (mp4), this should be the same for music.

Perhaps the scanner has changed recently, but multiple genre tags in MP3’s separated by a comma or slash appear in Plex as “genre1/genre2” or “genre1,genre2” exactly the way the OP stated. I believe mp4 files generally use a different format for tags, not necessarily the ID3 format.

You can get different results depending on the program you use to write the tags too. In MP3Tag, for example, use two backslashes (\\) to separate multiple genres, artists, etc and they will show up in Plex properly.

You’re right… did some more tests and it appears Plex isn’t splitting those embedded genres in mp3 files.

So replace something like genre="soul, disco" with genre="soul\\disco" and everything would work how I am requesting in Plex?

nevermind i see that delimiting with a \\ character fixes the issue. Once i update all my tags to use this how would i go about updating the plex library? do i just need to rescan the music library?

thanks

I think “Refresh all metadata” for the library is the way to go.

that all worked cheers for the help!
