Plexamp repeat songs too frequently - How to fix

Server Version#:1.19.3.2843-e3c1f7bcd
Player Version#: 3.03 iOS

I have over 700 songs yet with every station I select, PlexAmp only plays back 10 or 12 songs then starts over again. How do I fix this? This is on my iPhone at home with network connectivity.

what radio are you playing?
what is your degree of separation set too? (set it to unlimited)

I have degree of separation set to unlimited. This occurs in Genre Radio. Thanks for your reply.

Pick one genre as an example.
How many different albums by how many different artists do appear if you filter your library by this Genre?
(“Album Genre”, not “Artist Genre”, use the “Custom Filter” in the web app)

My original post says I have 700 songs. In fact it is 700 albums. When I filter on Album Genre Rock, the count is 432 albums. Thank you.

Was your music library ever converted to the new music program code?

Did you disable fetching of “popularity” data in the properties of your library?

Not to sure if my music library has been converted to “new music program code”. I did disable fetching of popular tracks in the library to see if that helps. Thank you.

Please re-enable it. The majority of radios needs these for proper function.

When you edit the music library, what is selected as Agent and Scanner on the ‘Advanced’ tab?

Take a look at the Plex XML info of 2 – 3 tracks from different albums.
Please copy the content of the guid, parentGuid, and grandParentGuid properties into here.

The scanner and agent are set to Plex Music.

Could you look at the Plex XML info of at least 1 track, please?

Plex_XML.txt (2.2 KB)

guid="local://10125" parentGuid="local://10124" grandparentGuid="local://10123"

OK, the local in all three of these tells us that neither the track, nor the album, nor the artist are matched to an online source.
Which means Plex has only the stars (which you might have set on a few tracks) to build a radio.

Set your library to the Artists view mode.
Pick an artist with only a few albums and ‘Refresh Metadata’ on the artist level.
Give it a few minutes. Keep an eye on the albums during that time.

What happens? And particularly, does the content of the XML change afterwards?

XML did change. Here is the output. I guess this needs to be done for the entire library?
Plex_XML_v2.txt (2.8 KB)

Yes, looking much better now!

Before you fire it up for the whole library, two important questions:

  • Do you have ‘Various Artists’ albums?
  • Do you have ‘Prefer local metadata’ enabled or disabled?

I do have a few various artist albums and I have Prefer local metadata enabled.

OK, then I assume you have already realized these rules:
(otherwise Refreshing Metadata on the “artist” Various Artists may wreak havoc)

  • Each track belongs into an album.
  • Each Album belongs into an AlbumArtist.
  • All tracks stored within the same (album)folder belong into the same album.
  • All album folders stored within the same artist folder belong to the same AlbumArtist.

I too have this same issue. I have 9165 tracks; over 782 different ALBUMS by over 258 ARTISTS (so far, but lots more to be added), and 57 different genres, but when I pick an artist and ask PlexAmp to play the radio statio for that artist with similar artists, it seems to always pick the EXACT same songs and in the exact same order every time. Why is this?!! I hate having to skip skip skip to hear a different song I havent heard yet. I have tried 3 degrees of separation and 1 degree of separation. I dont want unlimited separation as I dont want to hear Norah Jones signing when I am trying to play the Metallica radio station  I have plenty of different albums from each artists. All of the albums for each artist are in its own subfolder unde that artist folder. I have properly tagged my music using Exact Audio Copy and MP3tag as needed. How do I check if my library was converted properly or not?
I have not gone thru all my tracks yet to rate them and I usually only rate songs if they are a 4 or 5 and I dont bother with the 1s to 3s. I have been busying ripping my CDs to FLAC and uploading them to my Plex Server and catalogging my colleciton using Discogs app so I know what I have so I will need to star rate more songs and albums but…is that why or is there another reason? Please help thanks
