Very short songs that are under 30 seconds never get marked as played for me on desktop/iOS.
Noticed this bug because I use a smart playlist of unplayed tracks across my library.
I also find this an issue and there is no way to exclude these with a smart playlist filter so it is annoying when you want to have new unplayed tracks and they stay in the playlist despite being played.

I’ve also seen the same behavior on the Apple TV app.
