Plexamp: Some small feedback

  • It’s definitely a little buggy. Seeking will frequently cause the song to just outright stop playing and skip to the next one.

  • I like that it shows the track artist in the now playing view – I don’t think most other Plex players do it, but it’s very nice to have and very much appreciated.

  • It needs more size/scaling options. At the Roo setting, it’s still absolutely tiny on my display.

  • It’s a little weird that there’s a global search hotkey but you can’t then select anything with the keyboard.

  • None of the server-side things appear to be working for me – no volume normalization, no artist radio, no waveform seeking. (I’m running the version before current on my server, so that might be why.)

  • I’d love a Linux version. My current setup on my Linux box is Kodi with the Plex and MPRIS D-Bus interface addons, which is a little battery-hungry on a laptop.

I’m really enjoying it. Glad you guys are paying attention to the music side of things again

Make sure you’re on the latest version of Plex Media Server and re-analyze your music library.

I like this idea but I’m not sure the implementation, as it stands, will be useful for me — mainly because of bugs. I’m on OS X, 10.11.6:

PlexAmp window does not hover over other apps.
PlexAmp does not open like a regular app, so there are no menus, and no way to access the preferences, disconnect from server, etc.

Good job though. Please fix and update soon!

Yep, that did the trick. Thanks!

Can you reproduce this with specific tracks (wondering if it’s a format issue).

It’s a detail which matters! All our apps should, if not let me know and I’ll file a bug

Noted!

I totally agree! I always hit the arrow keys after searching, so expect at some point for us to add that.

I’m really enjoying it. Glad you guys are paying attention to the music side of things again

Thanks for the kind words and great feedback!

There’s a menu option (tray or menubar icon) for Always On Top.

There’s a menu in the tray/menubar which might address some concerns.

I think this may have been server-related too – after I updated, I can’t seem to reproduce it now.

From a quick check of what I have available at the moment, the Web app, the Kodi addon, and the Windows Store app don’t do it. (Screenshots – the track artist is somewhere on the screen on the Web app and the Windows Store app, but not in the now playing view proper) (I believe the Sonos service doesn’t do it either, but I’m not in a position to check; and I swear at some point the Android app didn’t do it, but it definitely does now.)

Thanks for the kind words and great feedback!

No problem! I hope you don’t mind me giving a little more then, hah:

  • When I click the play queue button from the now playing view, the space around the top two entries and the top 80% or so of the third entry refuses mouse input – doesn’t respond to hovering, clicks, or mouse wheel scrolling. This doesn’t happen when going to the play queue from Discovery or search. (Windows version on 10 Home with the Fall Creators Update, display scaling at 150%, if that’s relevant)

  • Multi-channel audio boost would be a nice option. (Realizing that multi-channel music is pretty rare, but I do have a 5.1ch album and the Web app has the option goshdangit)

the Web app

This is filed and due to be fixed this month.

the Kodi addon

Filed an internal issue.

I believe the Sonos service doesn’t do it either,

Filed!

Yep, we have a bug filed around that

We’re more about normalizing volume than boosted it at the moment

I was unclear, apologies. The problem is it’s not normalized as such when downmixed to stereo. It’s considerably quieter than anything else.

So far this is a pretty awesome little player. We’ve had a few rather comical missteps with the app control, Billie Piper took control of every player and wouldn’t go away ; but I think we’ve mostly figured that out. A few thoughts:

  1. Gapless playback - YES YES YES

  2. The normalize function doesn’t seem the do much good from what we can tell (the library is refreshed daily)

  3. The scale of the ROO player is still a little small. I also highly dislike the fact that i have to go to the icon tray to use the controls. Specifically I want a stop button and a close button. (Not all of us like keyboard shortcuts. Call me old fashioned.)

  4. I would like a little more filtering options, while the “radio” concepts are good, they really only work with libraries that are of a homogenous nature. In our library ( which we’ve talked to Elan about in the past) spans generations of music. So the radio function could pull up Dottie West followed by 311 and finishing up with Clara Smith.

  5. It would be nice if there was a “play next” feature - I use plex at work to provide background music and i use premade playlists - occasionally I get requests and it would be nice to be able to find the song, hit play next and then the app automatically goes back about its business of the playlist. (this is what happens in the Android app - or it least it used to until that kind of got messed up a couple of updates ago…hint hint.)

Here’s a bug. I have four different media libraries - Theater, Classical, Pop and Spoken Word. The library radio only works in the Pop library. The other three libraries (which have been refreshed today) it just freezes and doesn’t play anything.

Overall, I absolutely love this. I can’t wait to see some of these ideas ported into the mobile apps. Or maybe there becomes a Plex Mobile Music app and a Plex Mobile Video app . . . just a thought. Regardless - I will be using PlexAmp to control my Plex Android app on my tablet to play my overnight playlist so I can enjoy the gapless playback while I hit the road to dreamland.

Ah, gotcha! I think we should be analyzing those files for loudness, so must be something in the mixdown.

I’m using the “Regular” size option, and for me that’s fine, but really… Why lock the app to specific sizes at all? Surely, in 2017, every application should support dragging to resize? By all means, lock the aspect ration to what it is now, I love the compact look of it, but scale the contents dynamically so that those who want a really big window can have it, and everyone else can have it as small or large as they want.

A reasonable minimum and maximum size might be desirable as well, to avoid people scaling it down to like -1x-1 or something :stuck_out_tongue:

Mostly because the app is highly opinionated, and it made it easier to design for a fixed set of sizes. That may change in the future…

If you could port the gapless playback functionality to an plexamp iOS app I would be a very happy man. It’s the only thing stopping me using this as my go-to music server software.
