Would it be possible to add a sensitivity setting to this? I like the feature but would like to turn it down a bit because I find it can be a little too aggressive ending certain songs that have long fade-outs.
bear in mind it doesn’t end anything, merely overlaps with other tracks. but i guess you mean a track with a really long fade-out was overridden by a loud track coming in?
generally it’s super hard to pick a single fixed value which would work well for all tracks, so we wouldn’t recommend just adding a knob.
Yes exactly, the song is still fading out and has a while to go still but a new loud song overpowers it. I don’t necessarily mean a fixed dial, but I’m sure you guys have some variables that affect when exactly it decides to start the fade that could be tweaked? Some options like “gentle” “regular” “aggressive” or something I feel would fit the vibe of the feature very well.
One setting selects the dB level at which the crossover occurs, and it’s impossible to change it to “fix” one scenario without “breaking” another.
There is another limit of 15 seconds of overlap (we lowered it in the last few months), which helped some of those scenarios somewhat without hurting.
Hmm so I don’t have the code in front of me obviously, but my thoughts are something like:
Gentle:
Overlap limit - 10s
db level - low (only starts fade when audio levels are very low, lower than current setting)
Regular:
(Current configuration)
Aggressive:
Overlap limit - 20s
db level - high (starts fade at db levels higher than current setting for more pronounced fade)
These are just examples, obviously each would have to be tweaked individually to get the desired effect. Or perhaps one is enough and the existing code just needs further tweaking for edge cases. Just my thoughts, because overall I do really like the feature besides how it handles certain edge cases.
Another idea that keeps the current on/off design is some kind of check for a song with a quiet & slow fade out followed by a song with a loud intro, where the sweet fade is handled differently for that specific condition.
