PlexConnect transcoding?

Is Plex's great transcoding/conversion supposed to be fully supported via PlexConnect?

I read another recent post that seemed to suggest that it was, yet, whenever I try to play any video media that wasn't specifically Handbraked to ATV3 profile, I just get an error that the media can not be streamed. Even mp4's with seemingly proper aud/vid codecs don't play. File HAS to be m4v.

I'm running PMS off of my QNAP NAS, so maybe I don't have enough horsepower and the problem isn't that the format isn't supported, but that the stream is actually timing out while trying to trans? Or maybe there's a config somewhere that enables transcoding??

I just wanted to check. Because I originally ripped a lot of my DVD library to AVI's some time ago, and if I didn't have to reencode them, it'd sure save a lot of time.

I'm running PlexConnect as a service, so haven't been watching the system messages realtime. But if someone tells me I need to in order to help diagnose, I certainly will.

Thanks in advance!

I am using an iMac to run PMS and Plexconnect and have no problem playing AVIs. Just watched the French film Purple Noon as an AVI (highly recommended).

I don't think that the NAS PMSs come with the transcoder enabled... do they?

And that's because NAS' don't have enough horsepower to transcode? Or is it because the transcoder hasn't been ported? Or would it simply be a matter of re-enabling it somehow?
