Plexconnect with ATV2 and tricky network

Hi guys, first off thanks for all the hard work you have obviously done getting this project off the ground! Looks brilliant.

I'm running into a few difficulties with getting it to work with my current network setup. At the moment due to a lack of ADSL/Cable Internet in my area, I have a 3g usb mobile broadband stick connected to my main computer (which houses the PMS), with that computer connected via an ethernet cable to a router which broadcasts the 3g signal around the house so my other devices (such as the ATV) can access the internet (which works no issues). To do this I have to use Internet Connection Sharing on my windows machine, with DHCP disabled on the router (IPs are provided by the mobile broadband DHCP).

The Apple TV lists the DNS and Router as 192.168.137.20. The IP address of the computer with the PMS on it is 192.168.1.100. The IP address of the ATV is 192.168.137.131. I have tried changing the DNS on the ATV to 192.168.1.100 however this just causes the trailers app to hang when selected. Running the PlexConnect.py file doesn't throw any errors (initially it said that I couldn't use port 53 so I just changed the port to an unallocated one) and it locates the PMS.

Any suggestions?

You cannot just change ports and expect it to work (unless you understand what you are doing).

Port 53 is needed for the DNS server to work, the error that you got means that you probably already have a DNS server running.

It is possible, if you understand what you are doing, in the advanced to disable the PlexConnect DNS server and use your own but it is hard to tell from the above info what you already have running, e.g. what OS are you running, can you check to see what is using port 53, etc.

Thanks for the quick reply f00b4r. Is there a quick way to check which program is using port 53 - which program has already set up a DNS? I'm using Windows 8 64-bit?

Use netstat, post the output to pastebin, then post the pastebin link here.

Greetings,

I too am using Win7 ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) and cannot bind UDP port 53 as it is already in use.  As far as I can tell, I need to figure out how to bind the trailers site thru the DNS server that runs as part of ICS, but have had no luck figuring this out on the interwebs.

Any help or hints would be greatly appreciated.

And yes, I wish I wasn't using the ICS, but it is my only choice at this point.
