.plexignore borked with automatic scans enabled

Server Version#: 1.43.0.10231 beta
Player Version#: Redundant

Hey guys,

As the title suggests my Plex server’s “automatically scan libraries” option is a bit off. I use a lot of .plexignore files as I have an Emby server running simultaneously.

If I ahave automatic library scans turned off (Running periodic scans instead) all is well and the Plex scanner perfectly respects my .plexignore files, that lie adjacent to the video files I wanna have excluded.

I don’t know if it matters, but my .plexignore files’ content is the following:

backdrops/

So, if automatic scans are disabled it perfectly excludes all folders called “backrops”. If the automatic scans are enabled well…then it doesn’t and scans and immediately skips all “backdrops” folders.

This also leads to the Web UI behaviour to like…flicker, as it’s scanning/updating and instantly leaving out of the “backrops” folder (I can record a video of this if necessary).

Also, it seems like it’s stuck in some sort of “loop” if I enable automatic + “only scan altered folders” scan options → Adding files from “backdrops” folders, then discarding them again. I can clearly see that i.e. “theme.mkv” files are being added to “Latest added movies”, then vanishing again for the duration of the scan.

If I only use periodic scans it works perfectly fine.

This is btw only the case for my movie library, my 2 other TV show libraries work as expected with the same .plexignore content and structure :person_shrugging:

But for movies it’s like creating an entry, then deleting it again for each file in “backdrops”

This isn’t happening at all for TV shows. Same plexignore file, same relative library structure :person_shrugging:

Is this only happening on the latest Beta? Is the same behavior happening on the current production release 1.42.0? Could you share a little bit about the file structure, maybe a little example? Could you already enable debug logging, repeat the issue, and download your PMS logs and share them?

Hey there Atomatth, thanks for chiming in!

Is this only happening on the latest Beta?

No, I’ve had this on the previous Betas as well. At least the previous 3 Betas I know that the same issue occured.

Is the same behavior happening on the current production release 1.42.0?

I would prefer not to roll back to the stable release and take my server down. Currently running some long-a$$ scheduled tasks. But if there’s no other way I’ll ofc do it

Could you share a little bit about the file structure, maybe a little example?

Yes sure!

3 examples:

TV Show structure (working as expected):

/mnt/EmbyMedia/Serien/.plexignore

Content of .plexignore file:

theme.mp3
theme.mkv
theme_2.mkv

Example path that I’d like to have ignored amongst others:

/mnt/EmbyMedia/Serien/Your Friends & Neighbors (2025) [tvdb=443433]/backdrops/theme_2.mkv

Example 2:

Anime structure (Everything the same as TV Shows)

ls -la "/mnt/EmbyMedia/Anime/7Seeds (2019) [tvdb=356032]/"
insgesamt 96
drwxrwxr-x 2 donatus donatus 4096 9. Nov 21:23 .
drwxrwxr-x 842 donatus donatus 77824 10. Nov 11:27 ..
drwxrwxr-x 2 donatus donatus 4096 21. Okt 02:08 backdrops

drwxrwxr-x 2 donatus donatus 4096 26. Okt 09:00 'Season 1'

Example 3:

Movies (Not working as expected, structure, contents, relative paths mostly the same:

ls -la "/mnt/EmbyMedia/Filme/(500) Days of Summer (2009) [tmdb=19913]/"
insgesamt 5128428
drwxrwxr-x 2 donatus donatus 4096 9. Nov 21:23 .

-rwxrwxr-x 1 donatus donatus 5248180013 31. Aug 08:32 '(500) Days of Summer (2009) [tmdb=19913] - [Bluray-
1080p AV1 DTS] [DL German]-iNCEPTiON.mkv'
drwxrwxr-x 2 donatus donatus 4096 10. Nov 18:30 backdrops
-rwxrwxr-x 1 donatus donatus 575 31. Aug 08:39 GPT_Text.bak
-rwxrwxr-x 1 donatus donatus 2838070 4. Sep 12:57 theme.mp3

I tried a multitude of different contents for .plexignore like backdrops/, backdrops/*, *backdrops/*…all with the same outcome.

Could you already enable debug logging, repeat the issue, and download your PMS logs and share them?

Plex Media Server Logs_2025-11-10_19-02-31.zip (4,6 MB)

FYI: I just tried to reproduce the issue right before downloading the logs (Added a movie, let the automatic scan pick it up), but the behavior was different and correct. So I’m not sure if it’s an intermittent problem or not, but this has definitely happened a lot for me recently.

Also, right when I was trying to reproduce the issue it happened to my music library similarly, with an entry like “Scanning “Music” section” after every artist, leading to a “flickering” UI for every scan of an artist. Idk that didn’t happen before for my music I think.

Contents of .plexignore for music, which lies at the root of my music lib is:

*.lrc
*.txt

and an example structure is:

/mnt/EmbyMedia/Musik/Underoath/Act of Depression (1999)/01- Heart of Stone-VEXED.flac
