so I’m using a .plexignore file to ignore a sub folder in my main media folder. the only thing in the .plexignore file is “Foldername/*”
now this seems to work, but when I add new files to this subfolder plex picks them up and adds them to the library but labels them as trash.
I have empty trash turned off on scan because when the server reboots it takes a while for the storage to connect and plex would remove all my media and then add it all back again.
Do you have the option enabled to automatically scan you folder when there is a change? Plexignore is not found in that case so the files are added. Then when you do a full scan, the files are removed and show the trash symbol.
so, without moving the folder, is there a way to make this work? is there some combination of options that will allow either for the files to not be added and then trashed, or to allow the trash to be turned on/scheduled without having it delete my entire collection on reboot due to the delayed storage connection?
that didn’t work. the movies are added and not marked as trash. They just get added like normal.
tried a few variations with no change ultimately the only thing that did anything was including ‘/’ inside the .plexignore which resulted undesirable effects as well.
all reasonable ideas, my setup is complicated and it would require some effort to implement those… I will if I must, but I just thought this issue I’m having should have a simpler solution. The .plexignore should ignore the files, not add them then mark them as trash. Just doesn’t seem right… either I have a bad combination of settings or it’s not working like it should.
Or turn off Scan my library automatically; per @anon18523487’s explanation above, that’s part of the issue.
I have it disabled. But I still want new media to show up immediately. So whenever I rip a movie, my encoding script makes an API call to Plex to scan for new media. Most popular media download tools can do that, too.
I think I figured it out… so I have the .plexignore in the folder above the one I want to ignore, have the path in the .plexignore file… uncheck partial scan on changes, check full scan on changes.
I think the issue is the partial scan, it doesn’t bother to check for the .plexignore in the folder above it, just the folder is sees changes in. with the full scan it sees the .plexignore.
just ran a couple tests and it seems to be working as expected now. Hopefully that’ll be the end of this annoyance heh.
That might trigger a ton of scans of your library. If I understand how those options work together, it might mean that any file changing causes the entire Library to be scanned.
That might not be a big deal; even on my slow system, the directory info is usually cached, and it only takes a second or two. Just something to watch.
right, I thought about that and it’s why I didn’t have it setup like that originally, but then I was like… the server’s only purpose really is to run plex, and directory scanning isn’t going to bother that even if it did it constantly. I’m not too worried about it, as long as I can get little things like this to stop bothering me, and the system is as automated as possible, that’s all I really want.
