PLEXREADER: Comics, Books, PDFs

I have a channel for comic archives at GitHub - coryo/ComicReader.bundle: Plex Media Server channel for comic archives.

I only have about 10,000 eComics, but I have to say that Channel works reasonably well on my Roku, and both my Android and Fire tablets, as well as in Plex/Web. I’d obviously prefer this to be created by Plex themselves, and work from a Library so I could easily share it with family & friends. And it could certainly use a lot of features that Plex would be able to add having access directly to the server code. But for just myself, this is a handy way to be able to read any of my comics using my various devices, from anywhere I have an internet connection. Thanks for making it available! Much appreciated!

This is awesome! is there any way to increase the size of the pages?

It looks like he/she basically made a channel that can unarchive cbz’s and cbr’s into a temporary library using Plex’s already existing Photo Library functions. It defaults to the full image being displayed, with the closest edge of the image in the device used being the determining factor to the size of the image. As far as resizing goes, that probably comes down to the image player in the Plex Client being used on a given device. Some clients allow photo resize, like my Android tablet, others do not, like my Roku.

This is pretty much what I had mentioned earlier in this thread that Plex should consider doing regarding the display of Comics in Plex. Plex’s existing Photo library can already display the unarchived image files that make up the contents of a comic archive file. All that Plex needs now is a way to read, or unarchive, those image files from inside of a comic archive, then it can use it’s Photo Libraries as a simple Comic Reader. And that’s what this plug seems to do. A simple and elegant solution to part of a long-standing userbase request. Thanks much for actually doing it, @coryo123 !

@pruitt62: are all these comics in one folder or do you have subfolders?
I’m still organising my collection and they’re in one huge folder for the
moment

I have mine setup with a sub-folder structure for different genre’s and titles, so they are not all in just one folder. I have the one topmost parent folder selected as the main one in the channel options, then there’s a hierarchy of sub-folders under that.

Ok, thanks for the answer, it’s probably not working well until I separate
them in several sub folders then

If you want to discuss the channel or request features I have a forum thread here: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/216363/rel-comicreader-read-comic-archives-with-plex-cbz-cbr-cb7

+1 this would be great for manga & textbooks!

Would love to see this happen.

+1 Wont need to run multiple server

Me encantaría!! ojalá!

I also think this is a feature that Plex MUST offer.

To be fair you should include at least one option in your poll for people not interested in reader support.I for one, wouldn’t be interested at all and have the Plex team rather focus on media support.

That is not how Feature Requests work. There is zero need to complicate the voting process…by abstaining you have voted…the feature will receive fewer votes and another feature more.

While I am in favor of this particular feature I do not believe you really understand how voting in general works. An abstention is not a negative vote it is a “no interest” vote. If abstention was a negative vote then even this popular topic could conservatively be said to have an overwhelming negative vote. 589 likes to over 11,000 views or a positive rating of less than 6%.

I believe that either an “I am not interested” or dislikes should be used in voting and I have found that there are a number of insecure people on the internet that take dislikes personally so an “I am not interested” choice should always be made available if for no other reason than to save the bruising of egos.

Of course this is not truly important as the Plex deities do not truly seem to interact with their users and this forum is really just a “special” place where we can be actively ignored.

This would be wonderful! You’ve got my +1

Just adding my voice this would be great, after frustratingly trying to figure out alternatives. Nothing beats PLEX.

I would love to see Plex help me manage a digital comic collection the same way it helps manage TV show collection. Sure, other apps can do it. But the meta data info and the “tying it all together” approach of Plex is part of that appeal. the player aspect isn’t what I am after. It is all about managing the files.

This would be pretty cool. I already keep all my PDFs on the server where I run Plex but I have to struggle to read them remotely.

This would be an amazing feature to have! I really hope they add this in the near future. I’ve been looking for a way to organize my ebooks for a very long time.

+1

It’s the main thing missing from Plex. Would be super amazingly awesome.
