Of course, no news. They can’t fix camera Upload & Only bring features we didn’t ask for.
I am starting to think that Plex dev team is a good as the team behind cyberpunk 77.
I don’t think the Plex team is required to implement any feature suggestions, but I do think that after more than eight years they owe people a RESPONSE.
There are a limited number of things to vote on, and over 2,000 people have invested in this feature suggestion. Either tell us that it’s not happening, or tell us that you’re looking into options to make it happen. Leaving us in the dark is a jerk move.
I noticed the Plex staff is pretty decent at speaking up in the Google Home Integration thread (one of the few threads that has barely more votes than this one) to explain why they aren’t implementing that feature, but we can’t get any reaction from them whatsoever?
Voting to support this. Even if we can get a ‘bookshelf’ of books and comics that requires another app (like Marvin 3) to open and read is better than nothing. I see that Emby is experimenting with this, so it could be a good competitive advantage for Plex - all media.
The problem with Comixology is that it does nothing for people who’ve already built up a large digital library of comics. That’s like saying “Why have Plex when you can get media content from subscription streamers like Netflix?” The whole point of Plex is to stream files from your own collected library. As far as I’ve seen, there’s basically no solution out there for streaming a person’s own collection of ebooks or comics.
OH MY GOD I would love the ability to stream my already-massive collection of digital comics and ebooks! As far as I’m aware, there’s no way to directly do this while keeping the files stored to your own computer and/or hard drives.
I have a decent solution for ebooks at least. I use the “Send To Kindle” app to store them in the Amazon cloud. But Amazon’s organization sucks, so I only upload a few at a time and delete them when I’m done reading, and then I use Calibre to manually organize my library and track what I’ve read.
Comics are harder yet. There’s no direct solution for streaming your stuff, AND there’s no app that ties organization directly to your own files, like Calibre does for books. So I use the Comic cloud software from Collectorz.com to keep track of what I own and what I’ve read, and then I do my best to keep my folders and files named so I can find stuff easily. When I want to read something, I put the files in Dropbox. Then on my phone or tablet, if I open a comic from within the Dropbox app, it automatically launches my comic reading app with the comic open. It works, but it’s not exactly an elegant solution.
Even if I have to modify some metadata manually, I’d kill to be able to open an app on my phone, see my whole comic book library, maybe have an On Deck section that queues up the next issue in a series, and perhaps have Collections for multi-series crossovers.
EDIT: It turns out that Calibre DOES allow you to add comics to your library, but I’m not sure how well it does with finding metadata for them (assuming it finds any at all), so it may require a lot of manual work to update metadata.
Definitely, adding OPDS support to Plex would be game changer!
this is the point! there are no good other solutions out there!!
i‘d add so much to plex! for sure it would be good for their business.
why not do it and charge 50€ for it. i‘d love to pay for it!!!
I don’t know that I’d pay a subscription for it. Software companies have already gone too subscription-happy in the last decade (still not thrilled about Adobe going subscription). But I’d definitely pay a one-off fee to get access to a feature like this.
yeah. no subcriptions please. maybe it‘s just me, but i‘d think people that have plex servers and spend thousands of €/year on harddrives alone don‘t like them that much
Yeah, the only reason I even have Plex Pass was because I could pay once for the lifetime sub.
@CrashTestKing @plexmei I know waiting for Plex to pick this up and make it happen sucks, but for the mean time I’m running Ubooquity (it’s been mentioned on this post before) on my PMS and it’s working (a little slow outside my network) but it handles my Comics and Magazines well enough. I use Kuboo for Android but some say Chunky works with iPhone/iPad .
YacReader work pretty well for server\client comic sync … but it’s iOS device only for mobile for now (but runs on Win\OSX\Linux).
Appreciate the suggestions in this thread for Ubooquity.
ubooquity? when was the last update? 14.10.2018. that is nothing!!
there has to be a marked for this. i know plex can do this in an excellent way! three good programmers for five weeks could do something!!!
i don‘t care for myself, but i’d love to provide this to my family.
this would fit perfect for plex, i thnk it is what they need to do!
Given the fact that they already stream music and pictures, in addition to movies and TV shows, it seems like a natural progression to expand to other media like ebooks and comics. I’d drop $100 tomorrow if it got me an app that streamed my ebooks and especially my comics to my phone/tablet in a Plexy way.
i’m sure responsible persons read this thread. just do it. go! and after that you do audiobooks! no metadata, just provide what we need, to do it on our own. you do that and you have the best product on this planet!!
It’s kinda disappointing to see how much support this has gotten, and none of the Plex staff have come out and said a definitive yes or no on this, especially since this has been kept up for 8 years…
+1
I’ve been checking up on this thread periodically for the last few years. I’m honestly surprised it’s still alive and fairly active. I love Plex, but this may end up being a deal breaker if a more competent competitor arises. Mainly, I’d love to just be able to kick back and read comics on a large screen, but being able to track reading across multiple devices would be very nice as well.
+1
remember when plex game us a broken game service that we have to pay extra for instead of ebooks?
pepperidge farms remembers.
Yet another vote for this, it seems an obvious feature addition, and would be invaluable if I could store/server my school’s assigned articles and books in my plex server, as I already do for the video lectures. As has been discussed, it’s surprising that there’s been no official response for this thread, despite the over 2 thousand votes, and being active and requested for almost a decade now!
I’LL BOUGHT YOUR EBOOK READER.
Now that I have your attention. Everyone who actually read ebook know that ebook reader are better at it then a phone / TV or computer. (Comics is another story)
So if you guys, at plex, can offer that piece of hardware, I’ll gladly buy it.
Implementing this feature and offering an EPUB reader will give you some return on your investment.
Thanks me later.
Peace.
