Every night, for a few weeks now, I’ve been noticing a 326.6GB file on my C Drive, that lacks a file extension and has a different hash every night. I ran Process Monitor on my Windows 10 machine overnight and found that the file is created by Plex! It seems to have something to do with analyzing the duration of a piece of media. This is what I copied from part of the Command line process monitor captured "“C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\Plex Transcoder.exe” -codec:#0x01 mp1 -analyzeduration 20000000 -probesize 20000000 -i ". The result is a buffer overflow that writes 326GB!
I’ve set my Scheduled Tasks on Plex to run at 3AM, so something in those tasks related to a recent build (skip intro?!) is writing an absurd amount of garbage to my Temp Folder due to a buffer overflow.
Look, there is windows process monitor from the night before i posted. It shows Plex creating the file ending in 52f. Here is the Command line from Proc Mon and you can clearly see that Plex Transcoder.exe is creating the 326.6GB file ending in 52f
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\Plex Transcoder.exe” -codec:#0x01 mp1 -analyzeduration 20000000 -probesize 20000000 -i “Z:\Video\Plex_TVShows\Oz\Oz - Season 6\Oz\Season 06\S06E01 - Dead Man Talking.avi” -filter_complex “[0:#0x01] aresample=async=1:ocl=‘stereo’:osr=32000[0]” -map [0] -codec:0 pcm_s16le -b:0 256k -f wav -map_metadata -1 -map_chapters -1 -t 17381.68 C:\Users\chris\AppData\Local\Temp\8843a025-8c8d-4410-8d7e-40fe671cf52f -y -nostats -loglevel quiet -loglevel_plex error -progressurl
Which plex log do you want, because the debug log doesn’t show the file being created. I turned on Debug Logging, but i ctrl+f and it doesn’t find last night’s file.
Last night’s file was created again by plex, again 326.6GB.Plex Media Server.4.log (10.1 MB)
My plex media server log 4 logs activities around the same time the file was created.
That file is 480MB, but Plex seems to have some errors analyzing the file. Look at the XML for that file… I don’t think the duration is “Duration 9:39:23”.
I’m also having a new error - I can’t launch Plex by clicking on the icon in my windows taskbar. That’s new.
