Plug & play Plex?

I have Plex running on a Windows desktop with all my media on an external USB drive. Is it possible to move the Plex database to the USB drive in such a way that I can simply unplug the drive from the desktop, plug it into a laptop that also has Plex installed, and have it all just work?

And assuming this is possible, would it be advisable for the laptop to be another Windows machine, or should it work just fine on a MacBook?

Speaking hypothetically… you might be able to pull this off. You’ll need to install the same version of PMS on both machines and configure the Registry of both devices to point to the server data directory on the USB drive. You’ll need to make sure the external drive is always mapped to the same drive letter.

So much for the theory. In reality you’ll run into a lot of caveats and pitfalls – there’s just too many dependencies to keep in mind for this to be practical (my 2 ct).

If this is about taking some media with you while on the road – have you considered simply downloading the media using the Plex for Desktop on your 2nd laptop?

Definitely not

Thanks. This is about what I figured. Probably not worth risking the integrity of my main server.

Yes, this is for taking media on the road. Downloading is certainly an option, but I’m curious to know if a simpler, faster option is available for packing one’s whole library.

My other thought was to mirror my media on another USB drive, then unplug that one to take with. Plex on the laptop would have to scan the libraries from scratch, and I’d lose all my metadata, but it’s a small price to pay for the option of simply grabbing and going.
