PM4K / PlexMod for Kodi (18, 19, 20, 21, 22+)

Honestly, not sure. Feel free to test it and report back

Thank you, that definitely helped at least. It’s a lot better than it was but still pales compared to the aTV. I guess it’s the best we can get from kodi :frowning: Man do I wish there was a solution that had the best of everything by now.

Which device are you using? I use daily the Ugoos AM6B+ and have “Poster resolution scaling” set to 400% and “Background image resolution scaling” set to 400% as well. With it set this way my UI in PM4K is as sharp as my apple TV running Infuse.

Worth noting that I also manually set each poster and background image for movies myself, that way I know my library has high resolution images for everything. Cause sometimes Plex will pull in lower quality artwork depending on the movie.

Sorry, not even close. If you really don’t see the difference, maybe you have a problem with your aTV or infuse. I have the same setup, same 400 / 400 and it’s not even close on some artwork. Look at these two examples. Like I said, it’s better than it was stock for sure. But not nearly as good as it could be. Click each pic to view full size. I’ll also note the color rendering if off on the Ugoos compared to the Shield and aTV, native Plex apps.

It’s not a Kodi issue. ATV/Shield Pro both have a native 4K GUI. You can find the same in newer Amlogic boxes running S928X/CoreElec-NO, which is capable of a native 4K GUI. AM6b+ is on older linux kernel so that is not possible.

So choice is sharper GUI/MEL only or FEL.

No the Shield is not 4k either, it’s limited by it’s old android version. Plex is upscaled in it’s GUI as well. I have that too.

Hmm the details aren’t that drastically different on my setup. At least from sitting/watching distance. I have the newest 128gb ATV and Sony x90J.

Also the ATV displays the GUI in Dolby Vision as well If your TV supports it, so colors will definitely look different/more vivid vs the Ugoos which doesn’t render the GUI in HDR/Dolby Vision. That plays a big role in the perceived sharpness/color depth IMO.

My aTV is in SDR for the GUI. Try this - take pics just like mine and let’s compare. If you don’t have those, just ‘fix match’ on something else temporarily to grab the same posters.

And yes it looks much more substantial up close, of course. But that doesn’t change the amount of difference. I have a 83" and it’s easy to see.

I guess I notice a regression in beta8c. When I press the Home button on my remote, I am in Kodi main menu, after that, I can’t start PM4K again. I click in the Add-ons / Video add-ons / Plex icon, and nothing happens. Only solution is to restart Kodi, then it works again. The same does not happen if I just press back button on my remote until I have the Exit / Minimize popup and select Minimize. Can somebody please re-test the same? I use Ugoos AM6B+.

Edit: same if I long press Back button. It goes back to Kodi, but I can’t return to PM4K

No issue here, nothing changed, I just went to beta. Oh edit I have not gone to c - sorry might not be accurate

Will do. Should be back within an hour.

Will test and let you know if same happens on my end with AM6B+ shortly.

Interesting, I need logs. I’ve optimized minimize/maximize in beta8, but maybe I’ve missed something.

Edit: What’s long-press-back? I don’t think PM4K handles that. So it won’t know it’s been minimized and won’t maximize again.

Edit 2: Yeah, the fact that it happens when you visit home via a button as well, tells me exactly that. I guess I was a little too optimistic about “everyone’s using the exit->minimize option” and didn’t think about other ways of minimizing the addon.

Hi. Really enjoy this Mod, it brings together everything I was looking for from the official client. I have two Shield TVs running it, one of which I’ve updated to the latest beta. I have a couple of transient libraries which are defined as “Other Videos” and are not indexed. I browse them like an SMB share, complete with directory structure. Starting with beta 8b, I am able to access only the root of these libraries and files in the root play fine. If I have to change directories, it just does nothing when I click on the directory name.

It was completely browseable right up until I updated. It’s kind of an odd symptom as I can see everything, I just can’t drill down into anything. I thought maybe something with the LAN settings, but my attempts at finding the right combination there have failed. Any thoughts? My other Shield on a lower beta is not impacted.

Logs via DM, please!

Edit: pinging @bowlingbeeg I think this might have something to do with the folder fixes that were merged earlier

Edit 2: @travelar what’s the older beta version you’re running?

Thank you very much for the quick fix. I can confirm that with this 0.8.0-beta8d version the problem is gone. I can go back to PM4K even after I press Home button / long-press back button.

@MrFancyPants1999 Can you please tell me what resolution do you use for Kodi GUI? So what is set in Settings / System / Display / Resolution in your case? Currently I use it on my LG C3 (4K TV) my CoreElec / Kodi / Ugoos AM6B+ setup with 1920x1080p @ 120.00 Hz. Reason is that I prefer to have snappier UI. But if you say it makes sense to use 4K, and adjust artwork image quality, I would try it too. See my post here: PM4K / PlexMod for Kodi (18, 19, 20, 21, 22+) - #3679 by atld

Also, can you please tell me how do you automate to download higher resolution poster images? Or you just manually select? Is there a tool for automation? Is it Kometa?

Thanks for your answer in advance.

Hello everyone
Is ugoos am6b+ a Android TV?
Or anyone tested it with a Roomie Remote app? (I’m paralyzed and that app controls almost everything )
Looking to upgrade my SHIELD, I use the Kodi app for SMB and PM4K.
Thanks

Try those:

https://kodi.wiki/view/Advancedsettings.xml#imagescalingalgorithm

You’d need to test that. I have no idea how Kodis rendering handles this stuff. PM4K is exposed to Kodi as a 1080p addon only, but that doesn’t seem to negatively affect the artwork being rendered in a higher resolution.
