Server Version#: 1.18.1.1973
Player Version#: 4.8.3
I’m running plex media server in a jail on FreeNAS-11.2-U6. A setup I’ve run for years without issues. Ever since I upgraded the server to version 1.18 I’ve had issues with subtitles. If I play something with subtitles the video runs for a few seconds and the exits with “Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error.”. If I set subtitles to none the file plays just fine. I’ve tried 1.18.1.1944 as well as 1.18.1.1973.
Log looks like this:

Just confirmed that it’s not working. Created a new jail, installed the latest version of the plexpass media server, added a library, started playing a file without problems. As soon as i searched for and added a subtitle it crashed. Verified with several different files.
Please upload the full zip, and if possible the “XML” info from that item, I’m not having issue with subtitles but it could be something specific to that media files(s) ofc.
I have exactly the same problem with my LG TV. Everything is fine until I turn on external subtitles
The only working version for me is 1.17.0.1841
I have a problem with all versions after that, and only with my TV. Everything is fine through the browser or app.
I noticed that with 1.17.0.1841 everything is played on Direct Stream while the newer versions (1.18. *) video and subtitles are Тranscoded.
In FreeNas, I see the following after trying to play a movie: sonewconn: pcb 0xfffff80297badae0: Listen queue overflow: 193 already in queue awaiting acceptance (2 occurrences)
I tried everything i could find related to this message but unfortunately the problem remains.
Hope someone will come up with some ideas.
Plex is running on custom jail (not a plugin) in FreeNas 11.2-U6 with i7-8700 16G RAM
@Scarygary71 I am a bit confused now though, does it crash on SEARCH on on selecting the sub?
In at least one of those XMLs I see there’s already a downloaded subtitle, so I’m curious if this worked but only fails on playback, or if searching again immediately crashed the server?
But I’m assuming you meant only on playback of the selected sub right? Does it happen for other SRTs btw?
Question for both: Is any of you using Hardware Transcoding? (Assuming not since its FreeNAS)
It only happens during play. Not when selecting a subtitle or searching. It really doesn’t matter what mp4 or mkv I play though. Or what SRT.
Same with 1.18.2.x yes.
Same here.
FreeNas on Ryzen 5 2400G APU 16GB RAM, LG WebOS direct play.
As soon as I load external subtitles, transcoder fails.
Movie plays fine with Original, English subtitles, but external, localized ones crashes transcoder.
While playing transcoded version on the web client, it plays fine, even with external subtitles.
Please fix this because it seems to be a common issue.
Edit:
Downgrade to plexmediaserver-plexpass-1.17.0.1709 seems to resolve the problem.
Something is broken in 1.18
