On or before December 12th, 2023, I started getting “PMS BTQ” segfaults on my Plex server. I believe it is happening whether someone is watching content on my server or not, as it happens sometimes between 1 and 6 AM. Naturally, it stops playback and requires the service to restart. Most days, it crashes often; other days, it doesn’t crash at all.
Example:
PMS BTQ[1495803]: segfault at 0 ip 0000000000000000 sp 00007f6a7f9de310 error 14 likely on CPU 30 (core 14, socket 0)

What is BTQ? I tried to search the forum for “PMS BTQ” but it didn’t seem like anyone has commented about it before. I did find “PMS BTQ” on one page in Google but that was not what the user was complaining about.
I’ve had 45 crashes in the last two months and have been wondering if Plex has received the core-dumps or not. I found some dumps in my /tmp directory.
Some interesting things I saw in the log included:
- CUDA_ERROR_UNKNOWN: unknown error (ocassionally)
- X-Plex-Container-Size header exceeds limit 120. This will fail with status code 400 in the future. (flooding logs)
- Held transaction for too long (metadata related)
- MDE: unable to find a working transcode profile for video stream
- Caught exception trying to stream file: /transcoding/Transcode/Sessions/plex-transcode-AD395912-8FE4-4E86-9ED2-7C5422808A78-f874cb33-4b7f-40c7-88b2-6c6bbb2de49f/media-01472.ts: write: protocol is shutdown (SSL routines) [asio.ssl:167772367]
