PMS cannot support hardware transcode with Intel discrete graphics

Server Version#:1.30.2.6563-3d4dc0cce
Player Version#:1.63.3.3523-1eff9563
System : Windows Server 2022 DadataCenter 20348
Graphics: GUNNIR Intel Arc A380 Photon 6G OC
CPU: i5-12600 ( UHD770 )

I played 8k movie(av1/h264/vp90), unfortunately, hardware transcoding failed, cpu 100%, gpu 0%

I try jellyfin the same movie, it works fine, gpu 50-80%, cpu 0-10%

It doesn’t seem to be Intel driver problem, beacuse jellyfin can work fine in the same environment

by the way, jellyfin can choose which graphics to use for transcoding, but plex can not even choose decoder

I bought plex pass lifetime yesterday, now, i find plex is not friendly to A380

Is there some helpful advice, guys?

Thanks.

I want to build a computer as home server,so I bought those above.

When I go to setting my private media server,I choose Plex Pass beacuse I thought commercial softwares can provide more professional stable service for hardware transcode function than free softwares.

Unfortunately,I find that PMS is not friendly with Intel discrete graphics after I install system and PMS(Normal Method).

PMS technical support team blaming the problem on Intel, beacuse PMS totally supports NVidia cards hardware transcode.

I have both RTX3050 and A380 cards.

I must point out that A380 is a better choose for media transcode because it is not only cheaper but also lower energy consumption and it even support av1 hardware encoding.

With UHD770 and A380,I can even use Deep Link Technology for some media processing work because it is faster than rtx3050.

I tried to play 8k movie through PMS but hardware transcode failed, cpu 100%,a380 gpu 0%.

I have to try free software Jellyfin, with the same hardware and the same software,it works fine, cpu 0-10%,gpu 30-60%.

So,how can a free software do better than a commercial software among its pro area?

If Intel is really wrong, how can Jellyfin make it work with the same environment?

If PMS technical support team insists they will not promise to support Intel discrete graphics with all encoding format, can you just write it to your “Support Articles” site?

Up to now, there is no information about the hardware transcode of Intel discrete graphics on Support Articles.

yeah, plex scammed you. Get a refund either from them or contact your bank. Jellyfin supports your GPU though so it’s not like there aren’t options, just plex ain’t it.

I don’t have any 8K videos to test and I only have access to Windows 11 Pro, but from my experience and testing off PMS Windows and the A380 the issue does seen to be hardware related.

Running PMS as a service only h264 videos videos utilize hw transcoding.

Running as a ‘regular app’ PMS will hw transcode both h264 and h265 video formats (including 10-bit video).

So whether it’s a PMS driver issue or Intel’s, that’s up for debate and more testing.

I don’t know whether plex scammed me or not, but I know if i were plex employer, I would write intel discrete graphics compatibility into " Support Articles", instead testing by customer self.

Thanks.
I have already written an email for refund, ofcourse I told them what problem I met.
Interestingly, they encouraged me to visit " Support Articles " and post here.
Fortunately, they will give me a refund if I insist.

If Plex were a free open source software, I would test carefully and post detail information for discussion, but I paid.
I just want it work fine with minimum or no extra effort.
