Hardware transcoding Intel Arc A770 GPU

Server Version#: Version 1.31.0.6654
Player Version#: Version 4.87.2

I bought plex pass because it was supposed to enable GPU hardware encoding. It doesn’t work, just uses CPU. Is there a way to fix this or do I refund?

My A380 on Windows 11 Pro uses HW transiting with h264 and h265 in Normal mode, but only utilizes HW transcode for h264 when PMS is run as a Service.

How are you running PMS?

I’m not sure how often the Intel card falls back to SW transcoding vs my AMD APU, but it (the A380) does appear to fallback to SW on occasion in situations which appeared to use HW transcode previously.

I only tried running the plex media server program in windows 10. I might get a month of plex pass to test it out as a service when I can find the time to figure out how to do that.

I decided purchase plex pass as it was supposed to unlock GPU hardware accelerated transcoding. since it didn’t work as advertised I decided to undo this as the lack of support and documentation left me with no other options.

I’m running hardware transcoding on the A770 on the free alternative Jellyfin now and it just works with no fiddling. I’d love for it to work on plex instead as I am accustomed to the interface, but I’ll learn to use a new one.

Jellyfin might be a great platform, but it can’t replace the vast client players available on nearly every platform.

If I were you I’d get a refund for the 770 and buy an Nvidia instead.
The only reason why I went Into A380 was because it was cheap with updated and newer codecs.
If you aspect $300 or more ■■■■ the Intel solution, you are better off with a Nvidia solution for the dance price or a little more.
PLEX is great if you choose the right hardware.

The A770 is doing great and with no artificial transcode stream limits (unlike Nvidia consumer cards) so there really is nothing wrong with the card. Just need software that will bother using it. This shouldn’t be difficult at all for a platform that actually has a budget, yet the free open source competitor has won that race, plex has no indication of even showing up to the track.

I would not say that NVIDIA is neccessarily the solution, unless the rest of the hardware is also compatible. And it is not clear what exactly is compatible, not sure if there are any clear recommendations from Plex.

I actually recently bought a Intel A770 because of all the problems I was having with NVIDIA. I had previously tested & confirmed issues with Quadro T1000, Quadro P2000, Quadro P4000, RTX 4000, RTX A4000, RTX A5000. Emby & JF were of course working fine with all of them.

Turns out it was bacause of compatability issues with the rest of the hardware I was using, which happens only with Plex. All the NVIDIA cards work just fine with Plex in a different machine.

But I was actually able to get A770 working with Plex on a Windows machine I tested just for the heck of it. But could not get it working on Linux. Like usual Emby & JF worked just fine with the Intel Arc A770 on Linux.

How did you get the A770 to transcode?
