PMS creating cast duplicates on addition of new movie

Server Version#: 1.25.2.5319

PMS suddenly started showing a strange new behavior:
When adding a new movie all the cast gets added as duplicates of already existing entries. So for instance a new movie featuring Tom Hanks would create a second Tom Hanks in the database.
Both show up when putting the actors name in the search bar. Searching for movies with the new duplicate only shows that one new movie, and the “old” cast entry excludes that new movie. So it seems PMS handles them as two different people.
The same happens to all cast, director and writers when refreshing the metadata on an already existing movie. Duplicates of all of them are created.

However, after a restart of PMS all the duplicates get “merged” again and they are searchable as the same person.

Ok. I’m a bit confused though because I already did refresh the entire libraries metadata when I was prompted to do so some months ago after the switch to a new agent. So I have to do it again now? It’s a very large library and it takes ages, not to mention fixing all the posters by hand to the ones I like. Is there a possibility to do this without changing the posters?

This change is recent.

Refreshing items shouldn’t take very long, I doubt it should take much longer than 10-15 minutes for every 1000 titles.

Posters (or any other data) you have manually set won’t get affected by metadata refreshes.

Ah, ok! Thanks!
