PMS: last few updates introduced issue with playing content locally through my network?

Hey guys,
I’m currently on PMS Version 1.5.0.3501 and I’ve noticed that I’m having ongoing issues now with streaming when connected to my home network. Not sure what changed but it seems as though it happens when I use my iPhone over Wi-Fi at home, or the Apple TV that is connected via Wi-Fi. When on LTE on my iPhone, content plays just fine. I’m not sure what would cause for the stream to have issues when using a device connected to the same network PMS is set up on. My internet is 1 gig fiber so I can’t imagine that it would be a bandwidth issue. Maybe something with the router but everything else seems fine except for Plex. I’ve done a reset on the wireless router in case that was the issue but that didn’t make anything better. The issue still only occurs when playing content on a device and it shows “Nearby” since I’m connected to same network as PMS. I’ve uploaded a log where I tried to play content locally connected to the same network versus playing content while on LTE for it to be remote.

I’m seeing the same thing when viewing from my Apple TV - currently on PMS version 1.5.1.3520 (running on macOS 10.12.3). I’ve never ever had issues before now, and I’m seeing it pretty regularly with 1080p movie content. TV shows seems to not be affected (most of mine are 720p - so not sure if that’s the difference).

The spinner will show up for a few seconds, sometimes it’ll resume, other times it’ll just kick back out to the movie info page. It’s pretty annoying! Network bandwidth is top notch - no issues at all.

Are we really the only 2 users seeing this?

Thanks,
mbezzo

I’m seeing this as well. It is so bad I downgraded to the current public release to solve the issue.
FWIW, running the server on a Mac and playback is on a hardwired Apple TV

This has been happening for various users since the 1.4.x releases. The plex team haven’t been very responsive. Some people note that they can fix it by doing some crazy steps of reverting to a particular version then upgrading in a specific order… unfortunately, there’s no published list of previous versions, so it’s impossible to find the correct ones unless you have the installers laying around already.

I’m glad I’m not the only one…whew! I was told over on Plex Reddit that the issue may be my wireless network which I highly doubt is the issue. Devices connected to the wireless router work just fine on everything except Plex. I can’t explain though on why the same device having an issue when connected to the wireless network and showing ‘Nearby’ for server, can play content just fine if I decide to bypass local network and playing content remotely (using LTE). Speed tests reach about 200 Mbps when connected to the wireless router.

Is your Apple TV also connected to your wireless network or do you have it hard-wired?

It doesn’t seem to matter if it’s wireless or hard-wired. PMS seems to artificially cap local network bandwidth to 4Mbps. If I transcode to 4Mbps or lower, the stream works totally fine. No choppiness, no lag.

Hmmm… My devices that are hard-wired though (PS4 Pro, Xbox One S, LG OLED TV) play content just fine and are set to Original for local settings. Weird…

FYI - With 1.4.3.3433, I had issues with background scans constantly crashing (checked the files concerned, nothing wrong with them). As updates were released, I had gradually upgraded through to 1.5.1.3520. The crashing scans were greatly reduced, but files that played perfectly before (locally or remotely) just left an egg timer on the screen before the user or whatever player you were using eventually gave up.

So I rolled the server back to 1.4.3.3433, as I can live with the scans crashing for now, as the server appears to carry on running fine regardless.

My family and friends are also happy that things are ‘back to normal’.

Is there a way to get that version? I don’t have any of the previous installs. Is it a hassle to go back to a previous version? Thanks!

Wireless (since the Apple TV is only 100Mb wired, wireless is better in general - I usually get about 400Mb/sec in speed tests from it)

All my content is set to play back at original quality.

This is frustrating. Here we are with fast ass Internet and ■■■■ isn’t wanting to load correctly lol

1.4.4.3495 is the current public release that you can grab from plex.tv/downloads/, just make sure to toggle off the the Plex Pass Downloads option before you hit the download button

I didn’t even realize you stated earlier you downgraded to 1.4.4 to solve the issue. Will give that a try. Even the latest Plex Pass version released this week still didn’t resolve the issue.

There was an issue introduced in PMS 1,4,1 which affected streaming to clients over network connections with higher latency (like WiFi).
It is supposed to be fixed in PMS 1.5.2, which is available to Plex Pass holders at the moment.

It solved the issue for me, but downgrading is a poor substitute for a fix. Eventually the issues with the current Plex Pass release will work their way into the next public release. If this isn’t an acknowledged bug with the devs then those of us with this issue will be stuck on 1.4.4.3495 for a while…not ideal.

I’m pretty sure the latest Plex Pass release didn’t fix the issue for me but I’ll give it a try again just in case.

PMS 1.5.2 seems to have solved the issue for me. Running for an hour in both wired and wireless with no issues.

Yay! It’s working much much better now. Everything starts playing immediately now on the local network.

FYI - For me, 1.5.3.3580 worked fine with my main OpenPHT box, but brought back playback issues (especially with movies) on my ‘KI-Plus-T2+S2’ boxes, so I had to roll back to 1.5.2.3557 as I use these all over the house.
